Don Q Outdoors: Enjoy a special evening on December 3

If you hunt and/or fish, you might want to set aside the evening of Saturday, December 03 for a “Ton of Fun” with a whole bunch of your counterparts.

That is the date of the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA) of Carson City big, end-of-the-year, annual banquet.

Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association:
OSA is a local sportsmen’s club, which was founded way back in 1945; and with a 2011 paid-up membership of more than 220 members, it is one of the oldest and largest sportsmen’s group in the State of Nevada.
OSA meets on the third Tuesday of the month for the months of Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr-May and then again in Oct-Nov.

Each of those monthly meetings features a guest speaker.
For Jun-Jul-Aug-Sep, the club switches from meetings to picnics.
Then, the club closes out the year with its annual banquet each December.
This year’s banquet will be held at the Carson Nugget Convention Center.

OSA membership:
You do not have to be a member of OSA to attend the banquet.
If you would like to join the club, it will cost $5 for an adult’s annual dues or $2.00 for annual dues for anyone under the age of 16.
Nope, that is not a misprint: OSA annual dues are only $5 for adults and $2.00 for youngsters. I would challenge you to name any other organization in the United States whose adult annual dues are $5. I bet that you can’t.

Annual Banquet:
The OSA banquet will begin with no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m., followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., which in turn is then followed by door prizes, raffle prizes, live auction items and special awards to members (both serious and funny).

All of that for only $25 per person for anyone age 16 and over, or $12.50 for any youths age 10-16, or free for youngsters under the age of 10.
Plus there will be a door prize of $100 cash for some lucky guy and another door prize of $100 for some lucky gal for just being present at the banquet. Geez, how can you go wrong? Heck, $100 can buy lots of raffle tickets and you might get lucky in the raffle drawings.

In addition, every young boy and every young girl will each receive a nice prize for just being there on that evening.

The Evening’s Events:
After dinner, there will be a whole bunch of interesting things happening:
The presentation of the infamous “You Screwed Up” award to the member who messed up the absolute worse during 2011.

The 2010 winner was Rich Bachle of Fernley.

The presentation of the equally infamous “Sure Shot” award to the OSA member who fired the most shots while hunting in 2011.

The 2010 winner was young Savannah Law of Carson City.

The presentation of the winners and the awarding of cash prizes for the various categories in the annual OSA fishing contest for 2011.

The OSA “Skins” drawing of a cool $140 for being a paid-up member of OSA and for being present at the banquet. That should help pay for all kinds of presents for the upcoming Christmas holiday for some lucky individual.

Auction items and raffle prizes:
Some of the many auction items and raffle prizes this year are:
15 million candlepower spotlight: Donated by OSA
BB/Pellet guns (2): Sal and Catali Quilici
Case of 20 gauge shotgun shells: Sierra Nevada Retriever Dog Assoc.
Coleman propane three burner camp stove: OSA
Duck (Bluebill) print (framed): Bob and Lynda McCulloch
Duck stamp print: Nevada Department of Wildlife
Fresh-baked, chocolate chip cookies (2 dozen): Mary Bottoms
Marble cutting boards (4): Leon Treants
Midland Walkie Talkie set with charger: OSA
Muzzleloader (black powder) rifle: John Larson
Nevada Wildlife Record Book: Cavins’ Woodcraft
Nevada Wildlife Record Book: OSA
Red and white wines (6 bottles): Don and Elaine Quilici
Solar shower: Don and Elaine Quilici
Sport fishing trip at Lake Tahoe (2 persons): Gene St. Denis
Brand new this year:
A special raffle for just the boys and girls attending the banquet.

Finally:
Be sure to set aside the evening of Saturday, December 03, 2011 at the Carson Nugget Convention Center for a fun-filled time for you, your family, relatives and friends, together with lots of other outdoor folks.
And, remember: The dress code for that annual OSA banquet is “Casual, Casual, Very Casual.” Wear your jeans or you’ll be way overdressed!
Be there or be square.

For OSA information and/or banquet reservations:
Call either President Bob McCulloch at 882-6810 or Treasurer LaNora Clyde at 841-5758.

Bet Your Favorite Pigeon
Bet your favorite pigeon that he can’t tell you who has been the President of the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association the most times.

If he grins and says, “It’s Bob (Slick) McCulloch,” he might have been peeking at the list of Past OSA Presidents.
