On Monday morning, cross country parents received a notice that Carson High School’s Cross Country Coach Russell “Russ” Munyan is stepping down from his coaching position. This comes less than a week after the district stated their decision to keep the coach who is facing allegations of inappropriate conduct toward young female athletes and allegations of improper coaching techniques and behavior toward track and field athletes.

It is not known if Munyan is still employed with the district as he was also hired at the beginning of the school year to teach English. We will update with additional information as it becomes available.

The statement to parents is as follows:

Dear cross-country athletes and families, attached and below is a letter updating you on the team.

June 22, 2026

Dear Cross-Country athletes and families,

I am writing to inform you that Coach Russ Munyan has stepped down as the Head Cross Country Coach, effective immediately. We appreciate Coach Munyan’s dedication to the program this past year and wish him well moving forward.

If you know someone who may be interested in taking on this role, please encourage them to apply through the Carson City School District website.

I understand there may be some confusion regarding the optional summer workouts. To provide clarity and support, Mr. Macy will hold a voluntary meeting for athletes at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Edmonds Sports Complex near the playground. Parents are welcome to attend as well. While Mr. Macy will not be leading a workout, he will be available to answer questions, demonstrate exercises, and help athletes understand what training may be appropriate for them individually. Please feel free to share this information with anyone who may be interested in joining cross country this fall.

I understand there are two events that will be coming up. One is the TRT fundraiser. I am hoping there might be a parent willing to help organize this activity in case we don’t have a hired coach by then. The other event is the summer camp in late July. Ideally we will have a coach to lead this activity, but having someone who can help organize the planning in the meantime would be helpful. Anyone interested in helping with either activity should contact me. Please note that all volunteers must complete the district volunteer clearance process.

My hope is that we can begin this summer with a fresh start, welcome a new coach, and build toward a successful and enjoyable cross-country season. I look forward to seeing Carson athletes represent our school with pride and excellence this fall.

Wishing all athletes and their families a restful summer.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Macy
