Ride the train with Santa at Nevada State Railroad Museum

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located on 2180 S. Carson Street in Carson City, will offer train rides with Santa from 9am to 4 pm December 10th -11th and 17th- 18th, 2011.

Train rides are available for $6 per seat and will depart approximately every 25 minutes from 9:00am-4:00pm. Santa will be on board and visit all the children. Hot chocolate, food and refreshments will also be available provided by Warren Engine Company #1.

Js' Bistro to Host Fundraiser for the Dayton Food Pantry

Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a Spaghetti Feed on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5 – 8pm to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry. $10.00 buys a spaghetti dinner, with $5.00 going directly to the Food Pantry.
Last month nearly 3000 people sought help from The Pantry, including 127 new families, a significant increase over last year. That number is expected to rise even more as Christmas approaches.

Occupy Carson City to protest Saturday

Occupy Carson City, an offshoot of the worldwide Occupy Wall Street movement, will be staging a protest Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at the Nevada State Legislature on Carson St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend the protest appropriately being held on Human Rights Day, and Occupy Carson City has chosen this day to take a stand and protest for human rights above corporate rights. The protest comes on the heels of a recently-released study that ranked Nevada last in the nation for children's healthcare, often considered an indicator of human rights in any particular

Carson City has been selected by Where to Retire, the only magazine in America geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions, as a top retirement destination and will be profiled in the feature story “8 Tempting Low-Tax Towns.” The January/February 2012 issue will be available nationwide on December 20, 2011.

Willa Oldham Ramsden turns 100

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell wishes Willa Oldham Ramsden happy 100th birthday on Sunday, November 27th. Willa is a local historian who has written two books on Carson City history.

Public Utilities Commission Smart Meters Workshop

As part of its investigation into NV Energy’s Smart Meters program and its implementation, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled a workshop at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the PUCN’s Las Vegas office, 9075 West Diablo Drive, Suite 250, with videoconferencing to the Commission’s Carson City office, 1150 East William St.

NV Energy began installing Smart Meters in southern Nevada earlier this year. NV Energy is scheduled to start its second phase of installation in northern Nevada in December. The statewide installation project is scheduled to be completed by December 2012.

Volunteer needed for Shade Tree Council

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council. There are four (4) volunteer openings to fill a two (2) year term that expires January 2014.

The Shade Tree Council provides advice to the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every other month at 5:30 pm in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.

Open seat on Carson River Advisory Comittee

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from people interested in serving on the Carson River Advisory Committee. The Committee provides advice on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and operation of the Carson River. Meetings are the third Monday of every other month at 6:00 p.m. There is one opening in the following area for a three year term that expires January 2015:

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission. The purpose of the Parks and Recreation Commission is to advise the Board of Supervisors on the use of city parks and protect the right of all Carson City residents to enjoy the parks system.

There are four (4) open positions for a four (4) year term that expires January 2016.

Applicants sought for International Building Code Board of Appeals

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on The Board of Appeals in the following categories:

  • GENERAL CONTRACTOR
  • REGISTERED ARCHITECT

The applicant (depending on the category or if in business for themselves), may need a business license to do business in Carson City. This Board provides advice on matters involving the building codes and the fire codes in Carson City. Each position is for a two (2) year term that will expire January 2014.

Public information meeting on update to CAMPO regional transportation plan

The public is invited to meet with staff, ask questions, and submit comments regarding the update to the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). The RTP is a long-range plan that
identifies transportation needs and proposed improvements to be implemented throughout a minimum of a 20-year horizon. Staff has begun to update the previous RTP with a new planning horizon of 2035. The creation of this
document is a federal requirement of CAMPO. Public comments are encouraged and invited throughout the planning process.

Friends To All, Inc. Santa Visits for Senior Citizens

Carson River Park Closed For Construction

On Oct. 20, the Carson City Board of Supervisors awarded a contract to Horizon Construction, Inc. for various improvements to Carson River Park, located on Carson River Road at Lloyd’s Bridge. The construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 7, and will take approximately three months to complete, depending on the weather.

Author Jennifer Lauck Revisits Carson City

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Regional Transportation Commission. The RTC is the policy making body on transportation issues within Carson City who's purpose is to establish priorities and recommend appropriate funding for transportation improvement projects. The members of the Regional Transportation Committee also serve on the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Board to discuss and take action on federal monies spent on transportation and transit projects within the Carson Metropolitan Planning Area.

Do you have apples ripening on your tree? A local group of volunteer fruit foragers would love to come by and pick the ripening fruit. The Fruit Barons harvest unclaimed fruit and donate surplus to a number of local organizations. This year they will also recover apples to make cider for a social event hosted by Healthy Trees. Persons with ripening fruit can bring in their own apples or call the Fruit Barons at 220-6330 or 224-3827, who will donate some of the apples for a cider-making event to be held on Saturday, 5 November, 10 a.m., at 2578 South Curry Street, #5, in Carson City.
