Carson City Historical Society Garden Tour with Capitol Tree Walk

Join us for the Carson City Historical Society's Annual Garden Tour, this year featuring a Tree Walk of our Capitol Grounds by Tom Henderson of Healthy Trees. Visit 10 private gardens, talk with their gardeners, and enjoy exclusive access to the new Greenhouse at Carson High School. At 4:30pm we'll "Put the garden tour to bed" with wine, refreshments, and a talk by Joanne Skelly. The day is complete with demonstrations by artists at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, and plants & starts from the Mark Twain Garden Club.

What is the American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life?

The American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life is a noncompetitive walking event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

Bark For Life honors the life long contributions of canine caregivers. It presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to the mission of the American Cancer Society to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

Fundraiser for the Carson Valley Discovery Trail

The Carson Valley Trails Association (CVTA) is making plans for the Fundraiser for the Carson Valley Discovery Trail on Tuesday, June 19, 5 to 8 p.m., at the C.V.I.C. Hall in Minden. The event will feature live and silent auctions, games, live music performed by Foothill Road, complimentary refreshments and no-host bar. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 775-265-3736 or online at www.carsonvalleytrails.org.

Decommissioning ceremony today at Nevada State Prison

Gov. Brian Sandoval will speak at a decommissioning ceremony at Nevada State Prison at 11 a.m. today.

The Nevada State Prison operated for 150 years until the last inmates were moved out in January due to the state's budget constraints.

The public is invited to the event, and urged to bring cameras.

AAUW Capital Branch Awards Scholarships

The American Association of University Women, Capital Branch is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships.

Mary Longero, graduating from Carson High, plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno to study Nutritional Science, which will put her on the pre-med track.

Chyanne Corley, a senior at Dayton High, will begin her studies at Western Nevada College where she will complete an Associate Degree. She will then continue her education at the University of Portland majoring in Psychology.

AAUW Installs New Officers

The American Association of University Women, Capital Branch recently installed new officers for 2012-13. They are as pictured: Lillian Hack, President; Jane Johnson, President-Elect; Susan Klekar, Assistant Treasurer; Lin Nary, Secretary. Phyllis Westfall officiated at the Installation. Not pictured is Treasurer Carolyn Harris. AAUW, a nationwide network of more than 100,000 members and donors, advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. The Capital Branch does fundraising each year to present scholarships to local college-bound women.

Carson City children need CASA Volunteers!

Learn more about volunteering to becoming a guardian ad litem and speaking up for a child. CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour on May 21, 5:30pm, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th St. Carson City. CASA volunteers are appointed for to speak up for the best interest of children removed from their parents custody due to abuse or neglect. Being a CASA volunteer requires research, communication, patience and caring. It is rewarding and challenging. CASA volunteers make a difference for kids.

Jed Block to Present 'Now and Then: A Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes'

Jed Block will present a slideshow/talk on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library. The title of the talk is "Now and Then: a Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes." Mr. Block has collected numerous pictures of Carson City's Carson Street and downtown area from earlier periods, such as the 1950s and 1960s, and compares them to recent photos of the same locations. These comparisons reveal a lot about the history of Carson City and the colorful people who shaped its future. The event is free and open to the public.

15th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony

In conjunction with National Police Week, Thursday, May 3, 2012 the 15th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony will be held on the Capitol grounds in Carson City. The service will honor the 120 Nevada Peace Officers that have been killed in the line of duty. In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.

Carson City seeks applications for Planning Commission

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Planning Commission. This Commission oversees all matters pertaining to Carson City=s planning and zoning, land use and growth management. Meetings are the last Wednesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. at the Community Center, Sierra Room.

Applicants must be willing to serve approximately 12 to 16 hours a month. All members will serve without compensation. Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters to qualify.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Library Board of Trustees. This Committee oversees all Library policy and budgets.

Applicants must be willing to serve approximately six to eight hours a month. All members will serve without compensation. Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters to qualify.

There is one (1) open position for a term that will expire in June 2016.

Carson City SWAT Hosts 1st Annual Fundraiser

On Sunday, June 3rd, 2012 at 8:00 AM, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team will be hosting our first annual fundraiser “Zombie Shoot.” The proceeds of the fundraiser will go to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team to assist in the purchasing of emergency and tactical equipment for the unit.

Beginning Tuesday, April 24, through Thursday, April 26, the outside
eastbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed just east of Carson
Street for utility work from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each
day.

Beginning Tuesday, April 24, through Thursday, April 26, NDOT will be performing shoulder work on Snyder Avenue from Carson Street to Clear Creek Avenue, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. There will be lane closures with flagger controlled traffic.

  • College Parkway in the vicinity of the Freeway – Possible lane closures on the on and off ramps at the College Parkway interchange.
  • US Highway 50 in the vicinity of the Freeway.
  • Northgate Lane between Jumbo Court and Dyer Court.
  • Emerson Drive between Mark Way and College Parkway.
  • North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.

Carson High School Safe Grad Committee presents the 2nd Annual Safe Grad 5K Run~walk

Mayor Crowell Announces Support for Mayors and Mommies Month

Mayor Robert Crowell is teaming up with Nevada’s First Lady Kathleen Sandoval, Immunize Nevada, and the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services’ Maternal Child Health Division for Mayors and Mommies Month starting April 1.

Mayors and Mommies Month is a statewide initiative encouraging Nevada’s mothers to sign up for Text4Baby, a free national health information text messaging service. The goal of Mayors and Mommies Month is to have 4,000 mothers signed up for Text4Baby by Mother’s Day, May 13.
