Carson J.V. wrestlers compete at ROP tournament
Cruz Kerver won four of five matches and the Carson High junior varsity wrestling team went 2-3 during the Rite of Passage 2009 Winter Games dual team tournament held at Silver State Academy in Yerington on Tuesday.
Carson's victories came against a combined lineup of Silver Stage/Dayton varsity wrestlers 39-36 and against the ROP junior varsity 48-30. The Senators lost to 3A power Yerington 70-0, Incline 66-18 and finally lost the fifth-place dual against ROP's varsity 48-30.
Kerver, a freshman 125-pounder, won four matches and absorbed his only loss of the day against Yerington. Kerver held a 10-4 lead in his Yerington match, but then got caught in a reverse cradle and pinned, according to coach Jim Franz.
"He beat some good wrestlers," Franz said. "He's going to be a good one. He's green right now, but he's learning a lot of things fast."
Freshman 112-pounder Dustin Garza won four of his five matches, two coming by forfeit, while freshman heavyweight Jordan Woodward won four of matches, three by forfeit. Another highlight for the Senators was sophomore 135-pounder Andrew Cunningham, who won two matches by pin.
The Carson J.V. wrestling tournament will be held on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Morse Burley Gymnasium.
