WNC turns offensive, climbs back into SWAC pennant race with sweep
Thanks to a rejuvenated offense, Western Nevada College climbed back into the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball pennant race on Friday.
The Wildcats produced timely hitting to pull out a 3-1 opening-game victory against conference-leading Salt Lake Community College, then held on for a 9-8 win in the second game to complete a double header sweep on a sunny and breezy afternoon at John L. Harvey Field.
How big was this sweep? Salt Lake, which came into town unbeaten in SWAC play and riding a 15-game win streak, slipped to 11-2 in the standings (20-6 overall). Meanwhile, the Wildcats improved their third-place conference record to 8-6 (20-9 overall).
They just need to keep the momentum going on Saturday when the two teams play another double header at noon to close out the series. And the Wildcats want to avoid a repeat of last weekend, when they swept a Friday double header from College of Southern Idaho and then lost two games on Saturday.
