Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

  • 22 is 22 Too Many: WNC Veterans Suicide Awareness March: park south of Bully’s Restaurant, walk continues up College Parkway to Western Nevada College (10am)
  • Genoa Cowboy Festival: Cowboy Breakfast hosted by Douglas Lodge #12 F&A Masons -Served in the historic lodge building ($5; 8am to 12pm; Pancakes with syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage and coffee; Proceeds benefit the Masons’ local scholarship programs)
  • Fire awareness events this weekend in Carson City

    With a fourth year of drought and spring temperatures climbing, Carson City residents are urged to be fire safe. May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month and as conditions continue to dry, and the number of windy days begin to increase, the potential threat of wildfire grows.

    Protecting your home starts with you. The wildfire season is here. This Saturday and Sunday, the Carson City Fire Department will hold two events designed for homeowners to prepare for the season.

    There will be a Community Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Agencies and organizations have teamed to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

    Carson City Health Department says celebrate spring, get out and walk

    In recognition of National Public Health Week, Carson City Health and Human Services is encouraging people to get out and walk.

    “We really want to educate people about safe walking practices and encourage them to take part in this healthy activity,” said Cortney Bloomer, health educator for Carson City Health and Human Services. “I’m excited about it.”

    Learn the rich and fascinating history of Carson City’s Eastside during a two-hour walking tour. Led by Eileen Cohen, local author and historian, the tour will visit sites such as Chinatown, the race course, and many others.

    Meet on the steps of the Capitol at 9:30 a.m. Wear comfy shoes. A lag car will be provided.

    Tickets - $10 in Advance; $15 the day of the tour. Children 12 and under are free.

    Virginia City tales told at special museum event with Ron and Susan James Jan. 22

    Nevada writers Ron and Susan James bring stories from their latest book “A Short History of Virginia City” to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.

    Engaging speakers and experts in the state’s heritage, the couple will share historic Nevada tales of mining and the Old West. Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.

    Every first Saturday in Carson City downtown teems with happy people from all over the region for the Downtown Business Association's Wine Walk. Rain or shine, all year long, more than 30 local businesses open their doors for the influx of visitors seeking wine, a nosh, and perhaps something from a quirky boutique. Ten dollars will get you a Carson City logoed wine glass, a raffle ticket, a hand stamp, and a map.

    Alumni to be honored at Stewart Father's Day Powwow

    Former students of the historic Stewart Indian School will be honored at a special recognition ceremony as part of the 2013 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow in Carson City June 14-16.

    Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Alumni, the annual powwow includes quality Native American arts and crafts vendors and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

    Carson City Freeway landscaping ribbon cutting, walking tour set for April 19

    There will be a ceremonial ribbon cutting and walking tour to officially recognize the Carson City Freeway landscaping project and the freeway's multi-use path. The public is invited to the April 19 ceremony.

    The 3 p.m. ribbon cutting will be at the Northgate Lane Grade Separation, 3700 block of Northgate Lane, followed by a walking tour from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

    Winter Olympic heritage celebration at Lake Tahoe begins Saturday

    North Lake Tahoe pulls out all the stops to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics with the Olympic Heritage Celebration beginning Saturday and lasting through Jan. 21 at venues throughout the region.

    The event, which is sponsored by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association, kicks off Saturday, January 12 with the REI Winter Trails Day at Tahoe Donner Cross Country Resort in Truckee.

    Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau director Candy Duncan to retire

    After 21 years serving as executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Executive Director Candy Duncan has announced her retirement.
    She will officially retire on Jan. 1, she told the board in a letter. During her tenure, Duncan oversaw the transformation of Carson City as a travel destination, changing the tourism paradigm by highlighting the area's rich history and modern amenities as attractive attributes to luring visitors to the capital city.

    Lake Tahoe Science Conference highlights environment, economics, research

    More than 350 scientists, environmental policy makers and economic stakeholders will discuss Lake Tahoe and its environmental and economic future at the annual Tahoe Science Conference “Environmental Restoration in a Changing Climate” May 22 to 24 at Incline Village.
    The conference, this year being held at Sierra Nevada College, features a scientific poster session and the opening of “Visualizing Change, a photographic exhibition,” on Tuesday evening followed by two full days of seminars and workshops covering more than 20 topics in three main areas:
