Excitement abounds as teachers and students have been holding multiple events throughout Carson City this holiday season, everything from Christmas tree sales with CHS teacher and Adviser Ty McMillen’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes to the American Sign Language students of teacher Mary Anne Weaver putting on their Sign Me a Song Christmas production at the high school.

UNR scientists find causes of 'firenado' in deadly northern California Carr Fire

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.

Eagle Scouts saluted as scouting prepares for girls

Fifty-four Nevada Area Council Eagle Scouts were honored recently at the Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner by Scouting’s Chief Scout Executive, Michael Surbaugh, the council’s newest Distinguished Eagle Scout, UNR President, Dr. Marc Johnson, and Scouters from throughout Northern Nevada and Northeastern California.
