UPDATE: Carson City will host a presentation, the second of its kind this year, addressing the issue of school bullying, tonight, Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit group that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement, will discuss what many believe is a crisis affecting communities nationwide. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is located at 1870 Russell Way. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this free event.

Carson High School officially opened its new, very modern engineering computer lab Friday. The room's previous purpose was the old weight training facility but with the new addition of the wrestling room the logical place to break ground for the new lab was the old weight room.

In 1945, Johnny Mercer wrote “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” which became a hit. Subsequently, throughout the years, the song was covered by The Andrew Sisters and Bing Crosby, Bette Midler and Bing Crosby (Bing really loved the song), Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, and even the late, great, Ella Fitzgerald.

Entrepreneurs Assembly and Adams Hub for Innovation are pleased to announce a collaborative partnership to create, educate and encourage entrepreneurs via a comprehensive business start-up training program and mentoring initiative to launch this October in Carson City.

Both organizations are united in their missions to help develop, nurture and strengthen the entrepreneurial community in the greater Carson City area.

And so we begin week five of this year at Carson High School. The time passes so quickly. All sports teams are on a roll, and activities and clubs are full speed ahead as well.

The Reno Philharmonic Association celebrates Nevada's sesquicentennial with a Nevada 150th signature event dedicating the entire performance to the state during its Classix Two concert set for Oct. 11, 12 and 14, 2014 at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. This milestone performance marks the first full orchestral and choral arrangement of the state’s song, "Home Means Nevada."

A recent bruhaha over Common Core math was triggered by an examples from the THIRD grade, in Washoe county, in which a “math” lesson and a “math” problem was centered on full length study of the “Rights of Man” from the French revolution, “Universal Declaration on Human Rights,” and the children’s version, both from the UN. The only excuse for any math in this lengthy lesson was that at one point they asked how much it would cost to do a project to illustrate something in these documents.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Sept. 27 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 6:30 p.m., Tim Renner will teach a lesson in intermediate West Coast swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. As part of the Reno Philharmonic Association’s celebration of Nevada's sesquicentennial, the orchestra features a special arrangement of “Home Means Nevada” by David Bugli, originally composed by Bertha Raffetto, during its Classix Two concert set, a Nevada 150th Signature event.

The Reno Philharmonic is now seeking video submissions of “Home Means Nevada” performances from schools and music groups across the state to include as part of a video montage of submitted performances during the concert.

I visited a friend’s house this weekend and noticed a dog roaming freely in their unfenced yard. At first I was taken aback and then I noticed something. They were utilizing an electric fence. Put aside your feelings about electric fences for a moment and hang with me for a bit. This concept can teach us a lot about personal and professional boundaries.

Shawn Latshaw, 28 of Carson City recently completed an 89-day Semester for Outdoor Educators course with the National Outdoor Leadership School. This career course is designed to teach students how to work as confident professionals in the outdoor education field.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will present six “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” classes at seven locations across northern Nevada to provide information to homeowners, gardeners, landscapers and farmers who want their lawns to survive and thrive in a desert climate.

“Recurring droughts are a fact of life for Nevadans,” Cooperative Extension Horticulture Specialist Heidi Kratsch said. “This program will teach homeowners how to create and care for landscapes that are resilient to drought events, yet outstandingly beautiful. Yes, it is possible.”

Free beginner lesson starts at 6:30 p.m. Join the club that night, and the dance is free.

The fourth graders worked at the computer screens for hours, fingers dancing over the keyboard and figures on the screen spinning, growing and changing colors. And, their parents were happy. The students weren’t playing games; they were designing and building things like a whistle, buildings, hot air balloon, cars, DNA models, bracelets, airplanes and more, using a 3-D modeling and CAD design program.

As July closes so does Nevada Department of Wildlife's month-long BEAR Logic campaign, designed to teach residents and visitors how to live and recreate in bear county. This week NDOW advice provides tips if people should have a bear encounter.

Keep in mind that bears exhibit stress behaviors that indicate their anxiety and preference to avoid conflict with you. These are not necessarily signs of an aggressive bear.

— Moaning and woofing while avoiding direct eye contact with you.
— Clacking of their teeth and smacking of their jaws.

When a bear in its own habitat is exhibiting normal bear behavior, it’s unlikely to be a cause for concern. NDOW cautions people to never to approach or attempt an interaction with a bear. Of course the best option is to never have a bear encounter in the first place.

Carson City firefighters have a new tool to teach fire safety. "Fire Safety Day," an easy-to-read children's book, follows Owen as he comes home to tell his mom what he learned in school that day.

The book will be featured during two Storytime sessions at the Carson City Library beginning at 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on July 24.

Parents and children can simply show up at the library for Storytime and get a free copy of the new book in English or Spanish.

As we countdown to the NV150 Fair in Carson City, we want to honor the kids that make the fair so very special. These are the kids who raise the animals so lovingly, yet are willing to release them for sale. These are the kids now bringing attention to the farm-to-table movement and are learning the value of a job well done.

As the late Whitney Houston sang, “I believe children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
4-H clubs were formed to teach our children the importance of agriculture and to learn new ways to better farm or raise their animals.

July is BEAR Logic Month, a time to teach residents and visitors how to live and recreate in bear county. As many of you already know, securing trash is the best way to prevent human-bear conflicts.

What many people don’t know is that they may be living or recreating in bear habitat. As drought conditions persist, bears continue to move into more urban environments.

July is BEAR Logic Month, a time to teach residents how to live in bear country, including information on how bears are managed. BEAR Logic means to think like a bear and try looking at your property from a bear’s perspective. This will help you understand why bears are frequenting your property and how you can avoid these encounters.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife strives with every bear interaction to keep the bear wild and alive. In fact, the agency biologists and game wardens have a number of tools they deploy when handling a conflict bear, purposely designed to be non-lethal.

Carson City Library will host the 2014 Spokes team Monday as they ride through town. The group of seven students and alumni from Harvard, MIT, and Columbia are biking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

Spokes America is a bike trip across the United States designed to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) accessible to students everywhere. The Spokes team will be at the Carson City Library with plans to run a “Learning Festival” during their June 16 visit.

The English-as-a-Second-Language In-Home Program hosts a free tutor training workshop, 1:00-2:30 on Tuesday, June 10 at Partnership Carson City, 1711 N. Roop (corner of Roop and Beverly).

Light snacks will be served. Join community volunteer tutors and learn how to teach basic English to adults on a one-to-one basis. There are more than 100 adults in Carson City and surrounding communities who are eager to learn to speak, read and write English.

Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo and Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger recognized moms and their children at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

The awards were in recognition of the first graduating pre-school class of the District Attorney’s Moms Program and recognition to the moms for learning new parenting and job skills to help them into the future, according to a news release.

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

Residents across Nevada are being encouraged to attend “Living With Fire” Regional Conferences being held this month to interact with their neighbors, firefighting representatives, natural resource specialists and others to learn how to prepare for wildfire at their homes and in their communities.

Carson City will host a presentation on bullying by a Philadelphia-based nonprofit agency that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc. will discuss what many say is a national crisis affecting communities across the country. The Saturday, May 10 presentation, Bullying: The Silent Threat, will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street, in Carson City.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H presents Capital City Farm Days 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., April 17 and 18. There will be 30 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

Attendees will include public, private and home-schooled students and their families from Carson City, Storey County, Douglas County and Dayton Valley.

Registration has begun for the 2014 Kids Adventure Games, the premier race for children ages six to 14 that features teams of two competing in mountain biking, hiking, zip lines, a Tarzan rope swing, giant Slope-n-Slide, cargo nets, mud pits and more.

The race is scheduled for August 2, 2014 at Mammoth Mountain as part of a new, exciting eight-race series, the Kids Adventure Games, taking place at various locations across the nation. Event details are as follows:
