Carson City Manager Joins the Nevada State EB-5 Regional Center’s Board of Directors

The Nevada State EB-5 (NVEB-5) Regional Center in Carson City has named Carson City Manager Nick Marano as a member to its Board of Directors. Marano was elected to the position.

Additionally, Marano mentors at the Adams Hub for Innovation and is a member of the Western Nevada College Institutional Advisory Council. Further, he has been an active member of International City Managers’ Association.

Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship at UNR turns ideas into action

Helping support and inspire the growing number of students in the entrepreneurship minor program is the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship. Since opening its doors in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business in September 2014, the Ozmen Center has built an interdisciplinary program spanning across campus and out into the community.

“We teach a different way of thinking,” Chris Howard, Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship director, said. “I describe it as diagonal thinking. We take the knowledge students learn in class and apply it to get different and desired results.”

Celebration of Basques at Nevada State Museum family fun program Oct. 10

Basque language, food, music and play for the whole family are all part of a very special event at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10.

The monthly Family Fun Saturdays series gets kids involved in many aspects of the museum, from Nevada history to cultural and nature studies. October’s event features Xabier Irujo, co-director at the Center for Basque Studies at UNR, his five young children and several special guests who will entertain and share culture and heritage.

United Latino Community hosts a free tutor training workshop, from 1:00 until 2:30 pm on Friday, October 2, at United Latino Community, 1711 N. Roop (corner of Roop and Beverly). There are more than 100 adults in Carson City who are eager to learn to speak, read and write English. Light snacks will be served. Instructional materials and training are provided at no charge by United Latino Community. Neither experience nor foreign language is necessary. Commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

Washoe language class seeks to retain native culture

Spend a few minutes talking to Herman Fillmore and you quickly learn how deeply he cares about the Washoe people, language and culture. As a young adult living at the Dresslerville Colony of the Washoe Indians in Gardnerville, Fillmore has taken enormous steps to establish the revival of his native Wašiw language.

Hot August Nights and warm August days have arrived. Beat the heat inside one of Carson City’s many art exhibits. The Nevada Artists Association has just begun their Photography Show. Head over to the Brewery Arts Center to see it. If you haven’t been to the Courthouse lately, Capital City Arts Initiative has done an incredible job of showcasing some of the unseen craftsmanship that our local manufacturers create on a regular basis. You’ll find Industrial Arts on the second floor. The arts meet engineering at the Carson City Library. Students from Harvard and MIT will be on-hand to teach kids about various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles as part of the Spokes America Learning Festival.

Comstock museum in Virginia City presents collection of western art by Craig Sheppard

The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City will feature a new exhibit beginning Thursday, A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard. A native of southwestern Oklahoma and former bronco rider in Madison Square Garden, Sheppard was a prime mover in northern Nevada’s cultural community in the years following World War II.

A new computer and software system created by a Carson City man using interactive avatars to help those on the autism spectrum with social, conversational and motivational skills made its debut at the 2015 National Autism Society Conference this month in Denver.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s Family Fun Saturday program for July is “Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter,” for ages 10 through adult from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 11. No reservations needed.

The event is designed to allow visitors to gain appreciation for American Indian cultures of the Great Basin, with an emphasis on archaeological methods for learning about the ways people used shelters in the past.

Roy was born in Tonopah Nevada on July 31, 1937 and died in Carson City Nevada on July 5, 2015.
He lived his first three months in Manhattan Nevada where his father worked on the dredge. They moved to Honey Lake for five months before moving to Hawthorne Nevada.

While growing up in Hawthorne, Roy excelled in sports. He played baseball, basketball, and ran track. He was also football manager, in Honor Society, Block H, and went to Boys State.

Opinion: Time to set the colleges free

The governor, legislature, Board of Regents, and Nevada System of Higher Education deserve to be commended for working to improve education in Nevada during the 2015 legislative session.

However, for months we have looked on with concern about our state's economic future and that of our students. Simply, the recently revised funding formula, with a goal of rectifying inequities between the two universities, has created budgetary chaos for the state's four community colleges.

A summer like no other

The summer of 1776 must not have been much different from other summers gone and yet to come: Hot, muggy and miserable for those who had to work out in it. And in 1776 that included most people.

Like any other summer, that particular one 239 years ago was alive with fragrances in full bloom; the sounds of children playing in fields of wild flowers, and splashing about in creeks and ponds where it was cool; young animals frolicking in the fields; men and women toiling in their gardens and on their farms; and the happy songs of birds, crickets and frogs relishing in the summer solstice.
