Eagle Valley Middle School Science Olympiad Team Triumphs at Regional Tournament

The Eagle Valley Middle School Science Olympiad team won 1st place at regional competition held at University of Nevada Reno on Saturday, Feb. 8 against several teams from the Northern Nevada area.

Competition at the middle school level is opened to grades 6-9. Coached by EVMS science teacher, Josh Billings, the team is composed of EVMS 6th-8th graders and a freshman from CHS.

Jazz and Beyond seeks volunteers for annual Carson City music festival

The "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" will hold a kick-off meeting for organizers and potential volunteers on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 1200 S. Carson St., Carson City. This year's festival is scheduled to run from Aug. 1 to 17 at multiple locations in Carson City.

Please join us on February 15th for the fourth annual Carson High School Safe Grad - Safe & Sober 5K Run/Walk. This event is organized by volunteers of the Safe Grad Committee.

Carson High Safe Grad program has been an annual tradition in Carson City for over 20 years. It provides our graduating seniors with a safe and sober, all night celebration on the evening of their graduation, followed by a trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom amusement park in Northern California.

Carson City National Night Out ranks among best in the U.S.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has been informed that this year’s National Night Out, held in Mills Park in August, has been awarded 5th place among communities nationwide of populations between 50,000 and 99,999.

Carson City placed just behind Maple Grove, MN, Terre Haute, IN, Brooklyn Park MN, and Suffolk, Va. This award is Carson City’s eleventh consecutive year of receiving national recognition, each year climbing higher on the placement list of top rated community events.

Ventana Sierra Seeks Sponsors For Their Residents This Christmas

Ventana Sierra is a Carson City area housing resource for young adults who are homeless or who have aged out of the foster system. To date, they have two homes and an apartment open, and they are able to serve ten youth who need help. Right now, they have six youth who are living between the three properties, mainly all have been taken into the program from having been homeless.

Annual Cancer Run, Sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending, Raises $8,000

The 5th Annual Cancer Sucks 5k held last month and presented by The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® and PrimeLending was a huge success! The event brought out over 320 walkers and runners, many adorned in the color pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The proceeds from the event totaled close to $8,000 and will benefit local cancer patients through The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “Peanutcracker – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17 in Reno. The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation announces HopeFest 2013, an outdoor concert offering free admission with all sales on food, drinks and raffle tickets directly benefitting local cancer patients.

The outdoor event featuring the band Notch 8 takes place on Friday, October 4 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. outside of the Firkin & Fox restaurant on Third Street in Carson City. The event was rescheduled due to hazardous air conditions caused by the California Rim Fire.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada hosted their annual fundraiser, “World’s Greatest Luau and Kids’ Auction” on Sunday in Carson CIty with more than 700 attending.

This year the event was a luau theme, complete with mai tais, a roasted pig, and Club member entertainment. Marv Teixeira, former Carson City mayor, was presented with the first-ever “Distinguished Service Award” for his commitment to the Club and the youth in Carson City.

Carson Valley Visitors Authority to hire spokeswoman to showcase area attractions, amenities

The job is simple: tell visitors why Carson Valley, Nev. is “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” all while riding a horse. The Carson Valley Visitors Authority is looking for one horse savvy woman to become the “Carson Valley Rider.”

Launched in 2012, the “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” campaign plays upon the area’s gateway status as a tourism outfitter for the region. From Topaz Lake and the Pine Nut Mountains to the Tahoe Rim Trail, Carson Valley is looking for a storyteller to bring it all together.

Nevada Day pow wow organizers seek community sponsors for 30th event

Organizers of the 30th annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow to be held in Carson City during the Nevada Day weekend say the event is taking shape and are looking for sponsors and raffle donations to help bring the event to its fullest.

The pow wow began 30 years ago at the Carson Indian Colony. It is and has always been a part of the Nevada Day celebrations, said co-organizer Brandi Colunga.

However, through the years, some of those who participated in organizing it have stepped down. So, along with Martin Montgomery, the two are hoping to continue the tradition.

History of Rock n' Roll presentation Aug. 6 at Brewery Arts Center

Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture and demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of rock n' roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. 15th Annual WNC Golf Classic Invites Sign-ups, Sponsors

Player sign-ups, event sponsorships and raffle prize donations are underway for the 15th annual Western Nevada Golf Classic.

The annual fundraiser tees off on Friday, Sept. 27, at Eagle Valley West Golf Course in Carson City. The event provides valuable assistance to students and programs at WNC.

“The tournament offers a great day of golf and camaraderie for a good cause,” said WNC Foundation Director Katie Leao. “I’m looking forward to seeing a strong turnout.”
