The 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia City rocked, rolled and bounced Saturday among the thousands of partygoers who arrived in the famed Comstock town to celebrate a cuisine tradition of the Old West and swill some good ole' fashion Irish cheer.

The CHS teacher of the year is Astronomy, Honors Physics, and head CHS Freshman Football Coach James Bean Jr. Born in Okinawa, Japan where his dad, a Marine, met his mother, Bean moved back to the US when he was 4-years-old.

Leprechauns may well have had a hand in turning our seasonal fortunes around and making the ground hog look like he knows what he's doing.

Well we're here Carson City. We're heading into March 15, the last Friday of winter 2019. While March 20 may be the first day of Spring, the weekend ahead is about the Irish and their spring. The exception is tonight where the Western Nevada College Chapter of the National Student Nurses' Association will be going Italian style with a fundraising spaghetti feed spread. Read on for more.

Hello Carson City and welcome to Thursday, March 14, 2019. The warmup continues today with sunny skies ahead. We're six days from hitting the first official day of Spring. Are you ready? We're also counting down the hours for the weekend ahead and all the St. Patrick's festivities around the area. Read on for what's happening today.

Good morning Carson City. Today is Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Many of us woke up to a nice dusting of snow on the grass and around the hillsides. The white stuff won't last very long. While technically not Spring until March 20, a week from today, there's a noticeable warmup ahead, with high temperatures near 60 by Sunday.

UPDATE: The Subaru, Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers will be leading an Awareness Workshop at the Carson City Community Center in the Bonanza Room tonight. Leave No Trace teaches outdoor skills and ethics, minimizing our impacts and enjoying the outdoors responsibly. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Go here to register.

Today has earned a happy dance, because there will be an extra hour of daylight with which to enjoy the outdoors. Just remember to set your alarms so you aren't an hour late for work Monday!

Daylight Savings Time is about to begin, harkening the approach of Spring. Winter, though, continues its stubborn hold on the region, so bundle up this weekend in spite the extra hour of daylight. There's a chance of snow showers throughout the weekend with daytime highs only into the low 40s.

And remember to set your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night!

Heading into the home stretch that is Friday, March 8, 2019 we welcome you to the end of the work week. More spring-like weather is ahead, which isn't exactly all sunshine and flowers. Forecasters say they'll be some sun but also a chance for rain and even some snow showers. Stay tuned. Otherwise, read on for what's happening around the Carson City area today.

Many children in the Carson City area can benefit from the Seniors in Service Nevada's Foster Grandparent Program. Foster Grandparents are people 55 and over who enjoy spending time with children. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” volunteer time in schools mentoring and tutoring children. Foster Grandparents become a part of the culture and fabric of the classroom and school.

For Carson High School Senior Adelina Pacheco, studying the stars is a family tradition.

Her three older siblings completed senior projects on various interstellar subjects, and now it’s her turn.

This is the fourth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real incomes are lower now than in FY06. The third one noted Health and Social Services spending, the largest budget item, has grown most rapidly by far, driven greatly by federal health care mandates and funding.

Valorie Jean Turley left our presence Sunday, January 13, 2019. Valorie leaves three children, Jeremy Houston Sheldon, Jerrad Joseph Sheldon, of Carson City, Nevada; and Kourtny Jean Sheldon of Las Vegas, Nevada. As well as her three children, she leaves a daughter in law, Veronica (Mrs. Jeremy Sheldon) and beloved grandchildren,
Helen Bernice Sheldon and Garrett Sheldon.

Carson City Public Works crews are spending Wednesday assessing drain inlets and opening storm drains as the brunt of a winter storm is expected to bring drenching rain and high winds to the valley region and feet of snow in the high Sierra.

First Choice Consulting presents a Black History Program at the Studio, located inside the Adams Business Hub, 111 W. Proctor Street in Carson City.

According to Michael Smith, CEO of First Choice Consulting, a premier educational consultant firm will present a video screening titled "Educating Black Boys" after the 30 minute video screening there will be a discussion and reflections opportunity.

Immediately afterward the video screening, attendees will have an opportunity to sample soul food delicacies prepared by members of the community.

When thinking about investments and retirement goals, many people think about owning rental properties. After all, they pay for themselves, right? They can be excellent additions to a savings and investment portfolio, but there are also risks. Here are the things to consider.

First off, the good news
If you are considering purchasing a rental property, just about all of your expenses are tax deductible (unless you rent to family members). Your mortgage loan interest, property taxes, and maintenance expenses are all allowable deductions. Your accountant may find other deductions for you as well, such as a 27-year depreciation rule.

No high school on the planet has as many events regularly happening as that of Carson High School, and one of the biggest of the year, Winterfest, begins Feb. 1. This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

Democratic Gov. As of December, Nancy Paulson is the new City Manager of Carson City, after becoming Interim City Manager back in June. She took a break from work to share a bit of her story and her plans for Carson City's future.

Lone Mountain Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 1,700 military veterans dating back to the American Civil War.

Today they are honored this Christmas season for their service and sacrifice with Wreaths Across America, a nationwide event placing wreaths at the graves of fallen military personnel and veterans.

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program has awarded grants to six Nevada organizations, including a Carson City pilot project involving 30 restaurants.

Emilie Susan Doyle, 55, of Carson City, passed away on November 19, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born May 10, 1963 in Stockton, Calif., to Frank and Rose Marie Doyle, she moved to Nevada as a teenager where she graduated from Douglas High School.

The dust has finally settled on Nevada's 2018 mid-term elections following months of relentless media blitzing. I doubt that I am the only one breathing a sigh of relief.
