Bill Raggio, legendary Nevada politician, dies

Bill Raggio, who is considered by many to be the most powerful force in Nevada politics over the last 30 years, has died while on vacation in Australia Thursday evening. He was 85.

Jon Ralston of the Las Vegas Sun broke the news.

Raggio was first elected to the Nevada State Senate in 1972. He resigned from the seat he held for 38 years after supporting Democrat Harry Reid in 2010 over Republican Sharron Angle.

Raggio ruled the Nevada State Senate as the GOP leader and chairman of the Finance Committee. It's safe to say that few bills passed the Nevada Legislature in the last 30 years without his approval.

Raggio's legislative biography is here.

RGJ has posted a profile with photo gallery on Raggio's life.

Movie Review: 'This Means War' a good argument for peace

The film "This Means War," currently on view at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, stars Reese Witherspoon as Laure Scott. Which is good because she almost brings this turkey of a romantic comedy to life all by herself.

Outdoors with Don Q: Walking on mid-summer snowdrifts and deep snow fields

With our summer temperatures currently in the 90-100 degree range around Carson City, it is unbearably hot for this poor, sweltering soul.
I am a winter person, not a summer person, and do not like hot weather!
Thank goodness for those of us who live in this part of the United States, we can temporarily escape that miserable summer heat by finding coolness at the higher elevations of our nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Last Wednesday morning (July 20), Elaine and I did just that.

We traveled to Kit Carson Pass on California S.R. 88 with a three-fold purpose in mind:

Jelly Bread "Rootsy funk/rock"

"Dirty ensemble chops, rich vocal dexterity, and solid lyrical flows make Jelly Bread a legitimate festival act with huge potential..."

"Music meant for a night of soul healing on the dance floor with a little granola for breakfast..."

Mumbo Gumbo "Genre-bending Americana"

For over 20 years Mumbo Gumbo has been one of Northern California's top groups, releasing 9 original CDs and collecting numerous "Sammie" and "Best of Sacramento awards. The 7-piece band tours the Western United States, bringing their "genre-bending Americana" music to their many fans. Their big musical stew contains elements of soul, zydeco, folk, blues, rock, cajun, Caribbean, and country all mixed into their uniquely festive roots-music sound.

Movie Review: 'Drive Angry' the ultimate car chase film

The movie "Drive Angry," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is practically one long car-chase movie, starring Nicholas Cage and Amber Heart.

To fully enjoy this film you have to believe totally that there is an actual physical Heaven and Hell, not that the two are metaphors of consciousness. But don't fret about it; religious ideas don't count here.
