Even though plans are in place to eliminate the Western Nevada College baseball and softball programs after the 2016 season due to funding shortfalls, most of the incoming freshman recruits plan to honor their letters of intent.

The most veteran-laden squad in Western Nevada College softball program history enters the fall with the confidence and experience to produce success.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with. Watch the kittens play at Petsmart: SPCA is hosting a kitten party for adoptable pets. A concert with the Mark Sexton Band at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is a great way to end the weekend.

Roy Sheldon Kidder
Roy was born in Tonopah Nevada on July 31, 1937 and died in Carson City Nevada on July 5, 2015.
He lived his first three months in Manhattan Nevada where his father worked on the dredge. They moved to Honey Lake for five months before moving to Hawthorne Nevada.

While growing up in Hawthorne, Roy excelled in sports. He played baseball, basketball, and ran track. He was also football manager, in Honor Society, Block H, and went to Boys State.

June is National Soul Food Month, so my suggestion for today is a trip to Sassafras for some New Orleans inspired grub and a great free concert. Songwriter Bryan Hayes will be in house for one night to help promote his new album ‘Farther Down the Line.’ Check out the Official Video for his new Single ‘I Wanna Run.’ The song was written in Mosul, Iraq, and one of Bryan's soldiers, SGT Zach Tucker, is featured in the video.

There is chance of rain this afternoon, so spend some time indoors checking out the new exhibit in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. ‘Industrial Art’ presents the design work of five manufacturers in the the area including American AVK, CGI Inc., Click Bond Inc., Silver State Stainless, and Vineburg Machining Inc. The official opening reception is Friday at 5 p.m. Or enjoy the art at the Nevada Arts Council, inside the BRIC building on Proctor, inside the Sierra Room of the Community Center, or in the two galleries at the Brewery Arts Center.

It will be a HUGE mistake by Western Nevada College if they allow the athletic programs to walk. Period. I have kept a low profile in this just mainly to sit back and observe what is going to happen. Now, I’m coming off the sidelines to express my opinion.

The college is doing this to save money and I do sympathize with them in that regard but, they are not looking at what the college AND the city will lose if the programs are gone. The loss of money to the city and college far outweighs the money that would be saved.

Get over the mid-week hump with some live music. Dave Leather will entertain with some lunchtime Americana and Blues at Comma Coffee. The weekly Jazz Jam at Sassafras will see Rick Metz and his group First Take. Enjoy the tunes at Living the Good Life, Z Bistro, or Glen Eagles during dinner. Work up an appetite at the annual West Side Cruiser Tour: an easy four mile, family-friendly ride that leaves from the Brewery Arts Center. Find a costume, decorate your bike, and have a great time!

Western Nevada College freshman shortstop Makaylee Jaussi's speed, defense and productivity at the plate impressed coaches when it came time to name the All-Scenic West Athletic Conference softball teams.
Jaussi was selected to the first team on Wednesday and honored on Thursday during the opening day of the Region 18 Tournament in Taylorsville, Utah.

Shut out through the first six innings by Megan Mello, the Western Nevada College softball team didn't go down without a fight at the Region 18 Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon in Taylorsville, Utah.
College of Southern Nevada's Mello took a four-hit shutout into the final inning, but the Wildcats fought back to score two runs before falling in the elimination game, 7-2.

Western Nevada College Softball secured a fourth-place seat in the NJCAA Region XVIII Tournament, which continues through Saturday, May 9 at Salt Lake Community College. In the first tournament game the Wildcats faced Snow College who entered the tournament in fifth place. As the higher seed in the tournament, WNC secured the home team advantage.

Giving up a three-run edge in the final inning could emotionally deflate a team. College of Southern Nevada's comeback only served as more motivation for the Western Nevada Wildcats on Saturday.
Makaylee Jaussi's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the last of the seventh inning lifted the Wildcats to a 5-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference softball victory at Edmonds Sports Complex in the Carson City.

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

SATURDAY: Kentucky Derby Day:

Two pitchers who are being counted on to deliver postseason victories locked up in a pitchers' duel on Friday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City.

The annual Carson Girls Softball fundraiser for the Sharks Tournament Softball teams will be held on May 15th starting at 6PM at the Fuji Park Exhibition hall. For a $20.00 donation you will get all you can eat bratwurst and all you can drink beer! There will be a silent auction, raffle and door prizes from local business plus it’s a great time. All proceeds go to the Sharks tournament season and fund the program keeping the overall costs down for the girls in our community.

The Genoa Cowboy Festival is just starting, and I suspect that’s where Calamity Jane would be spending her birthday. If not there, than maybe up in Virginia City: today marks the first ‘Flashback Friday’ of the year, when all of the museums have free admission. Tonight she could catch some laughs at Carson Comedy in the Nugget or at the Brewery Art Center for First Friday Improv. Saturday she'd likely trade in her six-shooter for a wine glass, because it is Wine Walk Weekend.

After dropping two of the first three games to Snow College by two runs or less, the Western Nevada College softball team found the winning formula in the series finale Saturday in Ephraim, Utah.

WNC outscored Snow, 7-4, to avoid the series sweep in Ephraim, Utah. The win followed 2-0, 11-4 and 6-5 defeats to the Badgers on Friday.

With the victory, WNC remained in fourth place in the SWAC standings with a 14-21 record - one and a half games ahead of Snow. The Wildcats improved to 19-26 overall, with four games remaining against College of Southern Nevada.

As the 2015 Western Nevada College baseball and softball seasons near completion, it’s time to come out and cheer on the Wildcats at their last weekend home stands. “Stack the Stands” days will offer outstanding college softball and baseball, along with multiple opportunities to win great prizes while supporting the athletics programs.

After two weekends on the road against two of the best teams in the nation, the Western Nevada College softball team showed that it knows how to win when the playing field levels. WNC completed a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference softball sweep of Colorado Northwestern on Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City.

The Wildcats backed the six-hit pitching of Kristina George by lining a homer and five doubles in a 6-3 opening-game victory, then Gabriella Canibeyaz delivered two hits and two RBI in a 7-3 second-game victory.
