Lightning starts brush fire in Old Clear Creek area, 150 acres and growing; evacuation advisory underway

UPDATE 3 AM: Evacuation orders were instructed for Golf Club Drive, Jeffery Pine Lane to Old Clear Creek Road. There are about 20 to 30 homes in the area. Evacuees are urged to go to the Carson City Community Center. Animals can be sent to Fuji Park. The orders came down at around 1:45 a.m.

Carson City deputies make 23 arrests over holiday weekend

The Carson City Sheriff's Office reports 23 arrests over the holiday weekend period from Friday to Sunday, with a handful being for DUI and drug-related offenses.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the events this weekend at Mills Park generated a huge turnout, especially among families and by and large there were no major fights or crime-related incidents at the park.

UPDATE: 11:10PM: Two women were found dead Friday night in a Washoe Valley home while the suspect was killed in a shootout after a high speed chase on Highway 50 that began in Carson City and ended at Sand Mountain Recreation Area in Churchill County. One man was shot and injured and is at Renown Medical Center in Reno, said Washoe County Sheriff's Office Detective Lt. Tom Green. His condition is unknown at this time.

The suspect is believed to have stolen a white Jeep Cherokee, which was registered to the residence, Green said. Inside the garage of the home was a pickup with Arizona license plates. Detectives are trying to determine if the pickup belonged to the suspect, said Green.

UPDATE 9:15 PM: The suspect in a Washoe Valley shooting earlier tonight is dead, confirmed Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong who was at the scene. No officers were hurt. Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit, which began in Carson City on Highway 50 East and ended at a campground in the Sand Mountain Recreation Area. The campground was evacuated. At least eight Carson City sheriff's officers were involved in the pursuit.

Two arrested in early Sunday robbery of elderly Carson City man and caretaker

Two men are in custody Wednesday night following Sunday's armed robbery of an elderly man and caretaker inside a Canvasback Drive home, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Detectives with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested Jordan Burkhart, 24, of Wellington and Robert “Robbie” Michael Hernandez, 27, of Carson CIty. Burkhart was arrested at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office without incident on a probation violation, said Furlong. Following the arrest, the search continued for Hernandez and ended in the Reno/Sparks area. Bail was set at $250,000 each.

Carson City sheriff's detectives search for pair who robbed home at gunpoint early Sunday

Two armed men kicked in doors of a Carson City home early Sunday morning, holding two at gunpoint while taking items and demanding a safe, a Carson City Sheriff's Office detective said.

No one was hurt in the robbery, reported to the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 4:49 a.m. in the 1200 block of Canvasback Drive, said Detective Sal Acosta. Both men ransacked the home, occupied by a 101-year-old man and a caretaker, before leaving and remain at large, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Four candidates for Carson City sheriff squared off Wednesday night in a forum hosted by the chamber of commerce. The candidates were presented questions about budget matters, policies, goals and staffing.

The candidates are incumbent Sheriff Ken Furlong, Deputy Don Gibson, Sgt. Daniel Gonzales and former U.S. Marine Lorne Houle. Early voting in the primary election began Saturday. The primary election is Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

Man arrested in ATM robbery at Bank of America in Carson City

UPDATE: A 36-year-old man is in custody this morning after allegedly robbing a customer at an ATM machine in front of Bank of America on William Street in Carson City.

The suspect, Fernando Romero, allegedly stole $340 from a customer who was using an ATM machine in the robbery. He is being held on a robbery charge with a bail amount of $40,000.

Carson City Sheriff's Office nabs suspected Lake Tahoe bank robber

UPDATE: A suspect in a Friday morning bank robbery at Lake Tahoe was taken into custody in Carson City after being located by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, authorities said.

The suspect, Brent Muir, 55, of Carson City, was found by Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Mike Cullen after a vehicle pursuit by the FBI, Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County, Washoe County and Placer County, Calif., law officers.

After years of relative non-enforcement and mounting concerns of vandalism, trash dumping and illegal off road riding on public land designated as open space and not for motorized use, the Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up patrol of the Prison Hill Recreation Area south to Fifth Street.

Three arrested on heroin possession charges in Carson City Tri-Net sting

Tri-Net Narcotics Task Force arrested three men Wednesday afternoon in Carson City on felony heroin possession charges as well as obstructing officers and drug paraphernalia.

The arrests went down at around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a Carson City fast food restaurant in the 300 block of William Street. According to task force officers, the men resisted arrest at first but were quickly detained.

Law enforcement agencies warn of telephone scam targeting grandparents

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam involving grandparents of college-aged students. The scammers recently bilked a Douglas County couple of $4,000, said Sgt. Pat Brooks. In Carson City, people have been targeted in the past with a similar scam.

The way the scam works is a caller phones a relative, usually a grandparent, and informs them their grandchild has gotten into trouble with the law while on spring break. In the most recent case, the grandchild was said to be in trouble with the law in Nashville, Tenn.

Carson City Sheriff: Victim of Thursday night beating dies

UPDATE: The two men arrested in the fatal beating Thursday of a Carson City man said they were allegedly accosted by the victim who came after them with a machete, according to information obtained by Carson Now.

Leon Arellano Pacheco, 61, died Friday of traumatic injuries to the brain after being beaten in the parking lot of Stanton Arms apartments Thursday night. Two brothers, Ruri Santiago, 27, and Alfredo Santiago, 29, are being held without bail in Carson City Jail.

Safety improvements built into Highway 50 repaving plans between Carson City and Dayton

A $6-plus million repaving project along a stretch of Highway 50 east of Carson City is planned for late spring through summer with some safety improvements built into the plans, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Merge lane improvements, slope flattening, the installation of a t-intersection and turn lanes for easier access at Flint Drive and State Route 341 are scheduled as part of the safety upgrades on Highway 50 between Deer Run Road and east of SR341, said NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese.

Two people remain critically injured after a motorcycle crash Saturday night in Carson City, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The names of the victims have not been released but the passenger of the unregistered green 2007 Suzuki motorcycle is a 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman and the driver, 20, had Nebraska identification, said NHP Trooper Dan Lopez. They were flown separately to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Carson City hit again overnight by vandals; restaurant, business and vehicles targeted

Acts of vandalism again plagued Carson City streets overnight with at least three businesses and several vehicles hit with logs, stones, rocks and potatoes.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the incident happened sometime over night with reports of vandalism continuing to come in this morning. The vandals appear to be targeting business and vehicles randomly, said Furlong.

Carson City deputies arrest father and son on kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy charges

UPDATE: An 18-year-old Carson City house painter and his father were arrested Tuesday on three felony warrant charges including robbery, kidnapping and conspiracy.

Brent Michael Martin and Michael Ray Martin, 39, are each being held on $150,000 bail. Warrant for their arrests were issued Monday from Carson City Justice Court. The men were arrested at 4:24 p.m. in the 1900 block of East Long Street.

Carson City Sheriff's Office warns of new phone scam where caller threatens jail time

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam where a man claiming to be a law officer is calling and telling people they missed jury duty and they will go to jail unless they immediately pay a fine.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said at least five residents have been contacted regarding this scam and warns that people should not fall for it.

Wellington pilot Joseph James Miceli identified as victim of plane crash near Carson City

The pilot of a 1946 Cessna 120 found crashed east of Carson City on Sunday has been identified as Joseph James Miceli, 59, of Wellington, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Representatives from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were at the site this morning of an airplane crash discovered Sunday in which one person has died. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said a press conference will be held sometime today and provided a photo of the downed Cessna aircraft.

The body was removed from the aircraft at around 12:30 Monday afternoon.

Body discovered in downed airplane southeast of Carson City

UPDATE: One body was found inside a downed airplane Sunday southeast of Carson City near Mexican Dam in the Pinion Hills. Search and rescue crews found the body inside the aircraft at around 5 p.m., said Carson City Undersheriff Steve Albertsen.

Search and rescue crews were dispatched this afternoon after an airplane pilot contacted dispatch to report seeing an aircraft past the power lines in the Sierra Vista Lane area. A RAVEN helicopter was dispatched to aid in the search but was canceled after the Search and Rescue crews made it to the airplane and discovered the body.
