Don't be a victim of phone or cyber crime!

With the surge of Internet and phone scams, it's critical that all be vigilant when anyone contacts you with a deal that sounds too good to be true, is threatening legal action and demanding money, tells you to buy prepaid gift cards (iTunes, Visa, Mastercard, etc), someone posing as Microsoft, Yahoo, or other Internet company telling you that you're computer is infected and want to charge to clean it up remotely, or wire or transfer money from your bank account.

This is the fifth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

Jewelry Scam in Carson City

At Northern Nevada Coin we have seen a number of people bringing in gold jewelry that they have just purchased from a person on the street. The problem is that the jewelry is fake. In several instances the victim purchased the items from a mother with two children. Most of the pieces we have seen is marked 18K but contains no gold. The scam is someone approaching you with a story of needing money and wanting to sell their jewelry. Be aware that this type of activity may be a scam with fake jewelry.
