With the surge of Internet and phone scams, it's critical that all be vigilant when anyone contacts you with a deal that sounds too good to be true, is threatening legal action and demanding money, tells you to buy prepaid gift cards (iTunes, Visa, Mastercard, etc), someone posing as Microsoft, Yahoo, or other Internet company telling you that you're computer is infected and want to charge to clean it up remotely, or wire or transfer money from your bank account.

This is the fifth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real per-capita incomes are lower now than in FY06. The other two analyses reviewed spending on health and social services and on K-12 education, the two largest budget items by far and the only major areas on which spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy.

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony third offense domestic battery, a sheriff's deputy said.

It’s tax season again and this time of the year brings out the scammers trying to take away your money. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone to pay close attention to those ongoing scams out there.

A Texas company is contacting local businesses in Carson City asking for “sponsorships” for materials to benefit Carson High School. However, according to Carson City School District, this company has no real affiliation with the school nor the district.

Last month the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office visited a senior citizen for a Caring Neighbors referral. Caring Neighbors is a new program administered by DCSO, where qualified and uniformed volunteers call and visit the seniors in our community.

At Northern Nevada Coin we have seen a number of people bringing in gold jewelry that they have just purchased from a person on the street. The problem is that the jewelry is fake. In several instances the victim purchased the items from a mother with two children. Most of the pieces we have seen is marked 18K but contains no gold. The scam is someone approaching you with a story of needing money and wanting to sell their jewelry. Be aware that this type of activity may be a scam with fake jewelry.

The Carson City Fire Department was contacted Thursday by a resident who stated she had received several phone calls from a person soliciting donations for the fire department and fire victims.

A familiar phone scam began circulating in Carson City over the weekend, this time naming a Carson City Sheriff's Office captain as the phone caller.

A 64-year-old Mound House man was arrested Wednesday for gross misdemeanor impersonating a police officer among other charges, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

MINDEN — Douglas County residents continue to receive scam phone calls about missed court dates and jury duties that has resulted in two residents being scammed out of more than $5,000 each, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

NV Energy has learned that a person or persons are falsely identifying themselves as employees of the company in phone calls and are making deceptive threats about the customer's electric service. The telephone number used also falsely represents itself as NV Energy.

Maria Leslie was another victim of an internet scam. She suffered a theft loss of $405,000. She was involved in getting a divorce and a friend she trusted completely urged she send money to get a “large shipment of diamonds” from Africa.
