After five years in the 4 Paws 4-H Dog Club, Morgan Craghill, 14, had her first opportunity to compete in an actual dog show this week as part of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park.

The Carson City Fair gathers steam today: they’ll be setting up the carnival, judging the items in the exhibit hall, and the 4-H kids are showing off what their dogs can do. It’s a play-doh afternoon at the Carson City Library, in addition to their weekly Pajama Story time on Tuesday evenings. The Carson Nugget is hosting a job fair to fill a plethora of positions in their restaurants and on the casino floor.

It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

The third annual Sassabration diversity festival launched Saturday morning with a parade from the Brewery Arts Center to Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint at Carson Hot Springs Resort in Carson City.

What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

Organizers of the Carson City Fair are seeking volunteers to help with a variety of duties.
“We have lots of positions available,” said Lindsay Chichester, chairwoman of the Carson City Fair Board. “We have everything from helping with the youth livestock show to assisting the judging of the static exhibits.”

The wait for northern Nevada veterans is finally over. On Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., there will be Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home. The event will be held on the site of the new facility, 2 Kietzke Lane, Sparks, NV, which is located across from the DMV.

If you’ve been longing to crawl out from behind your air conditioning this summer, eat some mouth-watering food and experience colorful hijinks, then plan to attend the third annual 2017 Sassabration this Saturday in the parking lot of Carson Hot Springs Resort, 1500 Old Hot Springs Road in Carson City.

You’ll find fireworks displays in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and both the North and South shores of Lake Tahoe.

It may just be the third of July, but our country’s birthday celebrations have already started. You’ll find the annual RSVP Carnival at Mills Park with games, rides, cotton candy, and hours of skateboarding feats of daring-do. It’s an old-fashioned Fourth of July Party at the Senior Center in Dayton, complete with a show-n-shine and yummy bar-be-que. Head up to Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe for the early-bird fireworks show and beach bash.

Let the good times roll. Head over to Mills Park in Carson City for the annual RSVP Carnival and catch some high-flying skate-boarding action. You’ll find the historic Wungnema House open for tours at the very east end of the park. One price gets you unlimited rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and plenty of photo opportunities with their historic steamer. The Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) in South Carson City kicked off weekend Fourth of July festivities with a parade of engines event Saturday morning around the museum complex.

On a star-spangled Fourth of July weekend, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will be showcasing an all-star lineup of its rolling stock and giving visitors discounted rates for unlimited train rides.

Celebrate Independence Day with the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, and guest singer CeCe Gable at Mormon Station State Park in Genoa. Parade, festivities, five bands, games, old-time jams, chicken dinners, raffles, and more begin at 10 a.m.

"It was so frustrating and only so much we could do," recalled Kit Bailey of the U.S. Forest Service during Saturday's Angora Fire First Responder Remembrance Ceremony. "Its miraculous nobody got hurt."

Let the good times roll, Carson City. Cars, chrome, choppers, and kruzers are in abundance. Run Whatcha Brung at Fuji Park is open to any and all cars that can get themselves there. The Rockabilly Riot and T Bucket Alliance at Mills Park is an American Graffiti flashback. Cheer on our local motorcycle cops at the Extreme Motor Challenge, or hop on your own bike and go on a poker run with the Lords of Iron Motorcycle Club.

Celebrated as one of the best July 4th fireworks shows in the nation attracting an estimated 100,000 people, “Lights on the Lake” pyrotechnic display at south shore Lake Tahoe is synchronized to music from patriotic favorites to new chart-topping rock and pop hits.

People who show up to the Run What Cha Brung show next weekend will see cars from the early 1920s all the way up to 2017. “It’s a huge gamut,” said Loretta Marcin, president of the Karson Kruzers. “We respect anything that the car owner likes.”

Dozens of dancers honored the sacred circle of the parade grounds Saturday to begin the annual Stewart Indian School Father's Day Pow Wow, a tradition that dates back more than a quarter century.

The weekend hasn’t even started, and I’m already exhausted just trying to decide what to do first! Live music, races, activities, and much more await you downtown as part of the Carson City Off-Road. Stewart Indian School is awash in bright colors, beadwork, and dancers from all across the country during their annual Fathers’ Day Pow Wow. As the Golden State Warriors celebrate their second NBA Championship in three years with a parade today, Lake Tahoe can revel with the announcement that All-Star guard Stephen Curry will participate in the 2017 American Century Championship. Fellow Splash Brother and backcourt mate Klay Thompson will play in the tourney for the first time.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. Veterans and families from Carson City volunteered their time at Lone Mountain Cemetery on Friday by placing more than 1,000 flags over the headstones of fallen veterans.

Fire up that grill, Carson City, we’ve got the perfect weather to kick off the summer. The early Farmers Market at Musser and Nevada offers the perfect finishing touches to any picnic or bar-be-que.
