Every week (for the last two years) I have scoured the internet, followed the pages of local businesses and organizations, searched website calendars, and compiled a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

The July 4 holiday weekend has arrived and there are plenty of activities going on today through the weekend around Carson City.

The Nevada Rural Counties RVSP carnival runs through the weekend at Mills Park. Tonight RSVP will host a spectacular fireworks celebration over Carson City to go along with its 22nd annual holiday carnival.

At Sierra Nevada College's new Poetry Center grand opening event March 28-29, 2014, the college will be hosting Poet Laureate of California Juan Felipe Herrera and award-winning poet Jane Hirshfield for public readings and workshops. Reception at 5:30pm in Prim Library on the campus, readings at 6:45pm. Jane Hirshfield and Patricia Smith will hold workshops on Saturday morning. Open Mic on Saturday night.

The Sierra region’s own literary stars will be shining at the Ventana Sierra Advanced Writing Workshop Friday-Sunday, June 14-16, at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins is the keynote speaker and the architect of the event, designed to help writers of all genres and skill levels to be successful. All proceeds benefit Ventana Sierra Youth Housing and Resource Initiative, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit foundation created by Hopkins to provide housing and resources to local youth.

The next Music Club Monday at Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is Sept. 10 and will feature Richard Elloyan, cowboy singer and poet.
Elloyan has recently released his fourth CD “Back In Heaven.” Joining once again with his talented producer, Steven Swinford, they have created yet another compilation of lyrical and visually graphic stories of the modern West. Richard’s love for Nevada, songs of the land, and unrequited love are beautifully arranged and sung in the rich voice we have all come to love.

Sierra Nevada College’s Poetry Slam celebrates art of the spoken word

Poets will be aiming for a slam-dunk with a cheering and jeering audience at Sierra Nevada College’s Fifth Annual Poetry Slam at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, on the Incline Village campus.

Attention all poets, musicians, songwriters and comedians: Comma Coffee in Carson City offers a venue for you. Bring your hidden and not-so-transparent talents to open mic night.
Hosted by Jen Scaffidi, open mic at Comma Coffee showcases a variety of talent in a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere. All performers of any persuasion are welcome.
The show begins at 8 p.m. with sign-ups beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please note the talent for the night is usually filled by 7:45 p.m.

June Joplin has become a fixture in Carson City ever since she opened Comma Coffee 10 years ago. She often sends out e-mails about what’s going on at Coma Coffee, and we usually just pick up what’s coming up there. Lake Tahoe’s annual Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival has some of the most unique entertainment choices around-the-lake with its solid line-up of performing arts and cultural events running through the month of September. For tickets call (530) 541-4975 or click here.

Here’s the upcoming line-up:

Tahoe Dance Band performs at the Grand Hall on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The 17-piece band plays big band and swing with fox trots, waltzes, tangos, and polkas. Tickets are $15/$12/$5.

Join host Jen Scaffidi at Comma Coffee at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 for Open Mic Night. Sign-ups start at 7:30 pm and we usually fill up by 7:45 pm. The monthly open mic night showcases a wide variety of talent in a comfortable, inclusive atmosphere; Performers of all persuasions are welcome. To learn more, click here.

LAKE TAHOE — Get ready for jazz, Celtic, mystery, comedy, bluegrass, percussion and a whole lot more at the Lake Tahoe Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival. The Festival takes place at the historic Tahoe Tallac site, a 74-acre setting currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a 1800’s favorite getaway for Northern California’s elite members of society.  But you don’t have to be an elite member of society to enjoy the variety of affordable and sometimes even free events at the Valhalla Festival.
