With just a few hours of 2016 remaining on the West Coast, arguably the world's largest New Year's Eve bash in New York City's Times Square culminated at 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time with the real time midnight ball drop watched by guests at the Carson Plaza Hotel Events Center Saturday night in Carson City.

Resolutions are made, parties are planned, and the kids are smack dab in the middle of their winter break. As I contemplate the topic of this week’s Animal Files Column, I struggle. The reason is because the story that I am going to share is based off secondhand information. Youth who are planning New Year’s Eve parties this year are being asked to extend an unusual invitation — to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Working with the Carson City School District and Partnership Carson City, the sheriff’s office is promoting a safe a sober New Year’s Eve for the youth by encouraging school resource officers to monitor parties.

Friends of the Carson City Library is hosting a New York New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31st from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street.

A chronic shortage of K-12 teachers isn’t just felt in Washoe and Clark counties, which feature Nevada’s two largest school districts.

The problem is statewide, even in Carson City.

Susan Crowell, wife of Mayor Bob Crowell of Carson City, is a mixture of strength, forthrightness, and intrigue. Susan is an attractive, well-spoken, well educated, and independent thinking female — both as a wife, mother, and citizen of Carson City. The definition of who she really is lies in her upbringing, her education, her marriage, her children, and in her personal interests. The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, February 17, 2015 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

Our speaker will be Mr. Wayne Scarpaci, naval artist and historian, who is an authority on the Battleship USS Nevada, BB-36. The 100th Anniversary of the Commissioning of USS Nevada will take place on March 11 of this Year.

It may seem like just another Monday, but today kicks off the Year of the Monkey. Apparently it’s considered unlucky, but only if you were born in the year of the Monkey yourself.
