Nevada veterans honored this Veterans Day 2020 with video ceremony, proclamation

Due to most Veterans Day parades and other celebrations being cancelled this November because of COVID-19, Nevada Department of Veterans Services produced a video with support from the Nevada veterans and community leaders across the state highlighting what Veterans Day means to them, along with the following anniversaries:
— The 75th anniversary of the end of WWII;
— The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of Korean War;
— The 67th anniversary of the alliance between U.S.A. and the Republic of Korea; and
— The 30th Anniversary of the outbreak of the 1st Gulf War.
Nevada governor honors Veterans Day through proclamation, video message to Veterans

City of Sparks announces passing of Mayor Ron Smith
Submitted by editor on Wed, 08/19/2020 - 12:03pmAfter an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith has died. He was 71 years old.
Mayor Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. He was elected to the Sparks City Council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He served as Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore from 2012-2018.

Stimulus Program Information
The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Transgender Woman, Sherrie Scaffidi Announces Her Candidacy for State Assembly District 40

She is a widower who lost her wife of 42 years to cancer in 2012. Sherrie is the father of three grown children. She lived in Carson City from 1991 to 2005 and happily moved back in 2018.
Carson City chapter of Nevada Raider Nation makes donation to Veterans Memorial Cemetery

Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Veterans Resource Groups Visit Food Pantries in Silver Springs, Dayton and Yerington

TMCC Veterans Upward Bound shared information at the Yerington Food Pantry on September 18th. They will be on hand at the Dayton Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday, September 25 from noon to 4pm. They will also be at the Silver Stage Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday October 2 from 1pm-4pm.

There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

10:10 a.m. — Veterans officially “Welcomed Home” and thanked for their service. They, and the public are invited to avail themselves of services and outreach opportunities provided by veteran service organizations in Northern Nevada. Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.
Summit Estates Senior Living Donates $3,750 to Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center

The community’s team members and residents selected the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center (NNVRC) and presented a $3,750 check to Justin Chavez, Regional Site Director and Cristina Crawford, Program Support Manager on Feb. 15.
