CARSON CITY — The 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea inspired curators at the Nevada State Museum to think about some of the interesting Korean artifacts in the museum’s collections – and how they came to be here.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Museum and the Northern Nevada Children’s Museum are teaming up for a community celebration of Chinese New Year on Saturday, Feb. 17.

It is finally Friday, so let’s kick off the weekend. Start the day at Dunkin Donuts on Highway 50 and you’ll be treated to some free coffee, samples, and giveaways. Kids will have a great time during Books and Brags Storytime Adventures at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. The 19th annual Senior Fair at the Douglas County Community Center offers up a plethora of information, and is open to the public, no matter your age. You’ll always find a new headlining comic inside the Nugget at Carson Comedy: tonight Alex Elkin takes the stage.

Ready, set, crawl. The Brew Crew’s monthly pub crawl kicks off from the Laxalt Plaza next to the Nugget and includes up several downtown area taverns and restaurants. If your new year’s resolution includes volunteering, the Muscle Powered Trash Mob is a quick, but mighty, helping hand. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School Historic Site during an encore lecture at the Nevada State Museum. Flashback to Beatle-mania at the Brewery Arts Center or karaoke at Battleborn Social are just some of your nightlife options.

CARSON CITY — After more than a year, visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 year ago in the very same building.

CARSON CITY — History enthusiasts who missed November’s sold out Frances Humphrey Lecture on the future of Stewart Indian School have a second chance this Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Nevada State Museum.

Deborah Stevenson offers a refreshing, six-week series, featuring simple movements and guided meditations for balance and renewal. This Sheng Zhen Qigong course is suitable for beginners who have an interest in meditation but "can't sit still." Qigong means “energy in motion” and its purpose is to open and purify the heart. Sitting, standing, and lying down meditations will be introduced. This class is perfect for seniors. Non-yogis are welcome; the form is easy to learn.

For many first-generation college students, the transition from high school to college presents a number of cultural obstacles. Some need remedial preparation in key subjects; others require help accessing the financial aid available to them; and for others, English is their second language.

Thursday, December 21 is the winter solstice, making it the longest night and the shortest day of the year. With Christmas just a few days away, the holiday activities are still going strong. Share your wish list with Santa at Red’s Old 395 tonight and you’ll walk away with a free photograph. Your ugliest sweater is invited to make an appearance at the Carson Cigar Company; bring a white elephant gift if you’d like to participate in the gift exchange.

Contractors are hard at work in the Carson City Library, tearing out carpet to replace the flooring and paint the walls. While the library will not reopen until late January, limited services will be available during the closure.

The Carson City area is awash in entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly options this weekend. Santa Claus is popping up all over, including at Benson Feed for the annual CASI Pet Photos with St. Nick and aboard the train at our Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. The musical ‘Honk, Jr’ for the young ones and Love/Sick for the older crowd are on the stage at the Brewery Arts Center. Spend the day at the Silver Saddle Ranch: their annual Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore their trails and learn more about the working ranch’s preservation.

CARSON CITY — The sight of school buses outside Nevada’s seven State museums has become less common in the years since the Great Recession hit in 2007 as school districts dealing with tight budgets cut spending on field trips and their related transportation costs.

Carson City Library staff will soon begin packing up materials in anticipation of closing for up to eight weeks during a project to refresh the interior.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, you’ll see twinkling lights appearing everywhere. Carson City doesn’t light up our downtown until next Friday, but if you need an immediate fix of holiday decorations, Minden has got you covered. Candy Cane Lane at the Carson Valley Inn is a custom outdoor drive-thru Christmas light display. ‘Nevada Christmas’ is a private home on Chaparral Court, just off Stephanie Way, and puts the holly jollies into the holiday.

Some people do all of their holiday shopping on Black Friday. Others do their best to avoid shopping completely and spend the day after Thanksgiving relaxing at home. The tone of Black Friday can be equally mixed with retail businesses large and small.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. If you’ve got a bibliophile on your gift list, the Nevada State Museum has got you covered. You’ll get the chance to meet ten notable Nevadan authors, learn more about our great state, and get a signed copy one of the many books available. Read on and enjoy your weekend.

With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, is tonight’s speaker at the Nevada State Museum. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School, and probably some interesting things about its history. The Polar Express begins its seasonal run this weekend.

When Stewart Indian School was established in 1890 on the outskirts of Carson City, it was one of the first 25 of hundreds of boarding schools set up around the nation with a mission to assimilate American Indian children into mainstream culture.

The Nevada State Museum and WNC Latino Cohort presented a Day of The Dead celebration on Saturday in Carson City. Admission was free at the The Nevada State Museum, made possible by support of the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority, Western Nevada Materials, and the Nevada Mining Association.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Now that we are in November, thoughts turn to the holiday season. That means craft fairs. St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

We’ve got a wine walk weekend coming our way, come rain, snow, or shine. This one could get a little blustery; there’s a storm moving in. I’m just grateful that Mother Nature waited until after the parade and trick-or-treat night to send us some winter.

Alissa Guerrero, 18, wants the world to remember her grandfather who died in August. “Most people didn’t know him,” she said. “It’s sad because he could do a lot.”
