Area artists work on display at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center

The Capital City Arts Initiative opened its exhibition, BRIC Art 4, with artwork by eight area artists at the Carson City Business Resource Innovation Center on Wednesday. The exhibition will remain at the BRIC through early September 2014.

Carson City Symphony Concert 'The Lure of Tropics and Travel' features pianist Joshua Russell

Carson City after school string program offered through symphony

Carson City Symphony's comprehensive program of string instruction begins the last week of August, after school, at four locations in Carson City.

Strings in the Schools, directed by the Symphony's Education Director, Sue Jesch, provides free beginning violin lessons for students grades 2-5, a beginning cello program for selected 5th graders, and ensemble/orchestra experience for string students in all grades. Tuition and books are subsidized by the Carson City Symphony Association.

Nevada art collector Wally Cuchine speaks at Comstock History Center August 3

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. – The Comstock History Center welcomes renowned Nevada art collector Wally Cuchine to speak during a two-hour presentation on Saturday, August 3, from noon to 2 p.m.

Cuchine will be discussing his love and talent for collecting Nevada art as well as each of the 35 pieces in Wally’s World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada, an exhibit currently featured at the History Center.

Carson City Symphony presents 'Movies and More' Artown Concert in Reno

Alumni to be honored at Stewart Father's Day Powwow

Former students of the historic Stewart Indian School will be honored at a special recognition ceremony as part of the 2013 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow in Carson City June 14-16.

Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Alumni, the annual powwow includes quality Native American arts and crafts vendors and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will perform "A Celebration in Two Sharps" on Sunday, April 28, 4 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street. Guest soloist Stephen Framil will play the Cello Concerto by Antonín Dvořák.

The program also features Wagner's Overture to "Rienzi" and Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony. All three compositions are associated with keys having two sharps, D major and B minor.

For 2,600 high school students, poetry is powering up Nevada

By making the words of great poets literally come to life, more than 2,600 high school students across the state are competing to represent their county at the Eighth Annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals at Reno’s Whitney Peak Hotel, formerly CommRow, Saturday March 16, noon to 3 p.m.

A program of the Nevada Arts Council, Poetry Out Loud is a distinctive national arts education event that encourages students to learn about, memorize and finally present poetry --out loud. Nevada’s 2013 theme of “Powering Up Poetry,” is a nod to NV Energy, co-sponsor of the event.

Carson City Chamber Singers benefit for Sandy Hook tonight

The Western Nevada College exhibit "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" continues to travel the country, now with a stop at Wisconsin's Mount Mary College.
Marilee Swirczek, Emeritus Professor of English at Western Nevada College notes the exhibit at the college and an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Carson City Symphony Strings in the Schools presents 'This is not a Christmas Concert'

Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its third annual "This is Not a Christmas Concert" on Tuesday, December 4, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.

About 80 string players, including Carson City public-, private-, and home-schooled students, and students from surrounding areas, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk and fiddle tunes, including Pachelbel's Canon in D, Lackawanna Locomotive, and Japanese Hoedown. Admission is free.

Carson City Symphony Concert 'Scandinavia and All That Jazz' set for Sunday

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 29th season on Sunday, 4 p.m., with a concert, "Scandinavia and All That Jazz," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

After the first half of the concert, harmonica player Tom Stryker will lead a harmonica workshop for youth attending the concert. Each will be given a harmonica and learn to play a tune. After intermission, they will perform on stage.

Chamber singers hold concerts in Carson City, Reno

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke.

The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

Poetry Out Loud Registration Due Dec. 1

High school teachers and students are invited to get involved in Nevada Poetry Out Loud, the dynamic poetry program that is structured similarly to the National Spelling Bee, but focuses on literary heritage through memorization and performance of classic and contemporary poetry. Carson City, NV – Two local folk musicians are finding benefactors for their music via the Internet. When the husband-and-wife folk duo Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance went looking for some financial help with publishing their upcoming music CD release, they decided to try a novel approach - auctioning off sponsorships on their CD via ebay.
