Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Keep reading for three days of good times.

SATURDAY:

It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

March is National Women in History Month and the Douglas County Historical Society will be honoring five women for their significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County. DCHS has reached out to the community asking for nominees that fit this category yearly since 1999.

The history gathered is archived at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in the VanSickle Research Library and with the Women In History Project, Reno.

It’s a great time to be a business student at Western Nevada College. Changes to WNC’s Business program are providing students with important community contacts, real-world training, marketable skills, online course offerings and the opportunity to transfer to a four-year business program as a junior.

More than $300,000 has been awarded to the Nevada Humane Society (NHS) by Maddie’s Fund, a nationally known family foundation based in Pleasanton, California, to expand life-saving efforts at the brand-new Carson City Animal Shelter.

I’m a fan of hummingbirds. They are amazing aerobatic wizards. They can fly in all directions including backwards and upside down at speeds of 30 to 45 mph. They can hover like miniature helicopters. They beat their wings 60 to 200 times per second. These tiny powerhouses weigh about as much as a penny, in some cases, yet they are fierce defenders of their territory.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Sunday is the last chance for celebrity sightings at Edgewood Golf Resort in at south shore Lake Tahoe as the American Century Celebrity Championship tournament comes to a close. Learn about the legacy of Douglas County’s Dangberg family from the rancher’s grandson, author Steve Archard. Locals enjoy a special price on the Virginia and Truckee steam train, or the McKeen Motor car at the Nevada Railroad Museum.

SUNDAY:

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. There's an unspoken connection between horse and rider that has existed for thousands of years, a timeless a bond formed between man and animal based on trust.

This free community event is hosted by The Littlest Things a Carson City, a 501c3 non profit that creates free fun community events throughout the Carson Valley. This event will have s'mores, crafts and the miniature animal petting area. We will also have pony cart rides for a small donation. Click on the flier to enlarge.

Moses and Flash enjoyed the attention of visitors Saturday at the STEP, Inc. Fundraiser held at the CAL-Ranch Store located at the corner of N. Carson Street and Old Hot Springs Road.

Join "STEP" for our fundraiser to raise money for local Veterans and kids from the Boys and Girls Club for therapeutic riding sessions. If you were to encounter a pretty, petite blonde named Samantha Schultz in the hallways of Carson High, your first thought might be “cheerleader.” You certainly wouldn’t think “racecar driver,” but Schultz just became the first female track champion in the Strictly Stock division at Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville. The ironic thing is that at 17 she doesn’t have her driver’s license yet, and is driving on a learner’s permit.
