"People just want to have a good time," Yap said. He envisions his restaurants to be Cheers-style local's hangouts, and even names many of his menu items after his customers.

The Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons

Each year, as my last article for that year, I present my Annual Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons: Outstanding, good, not so good, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.
Those annual awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year. It’s an interesting way to end the year, so here are my 2011 winners:

Red Hut Resturant Opens in Carson City

The new Red Hut is now open on South Carson Stret, in the old Woody's diner location. The original Red Hut opened in South Lake Tahoe in 1959. They have since added three more locations on the South Shore, and this is their fire restaurant outside of Tahoe.

"The Red Hut Cafe offers its Carson Valley clientele the same menu and hospitality that made the small family operated restaurant chain a living legend at Lake Tahoe for over 50 years," according to the restaurant's website.

Dungeness crab season opens December 15

Dungeness crab is back on the menu for holiday feasts as commercial crabbing opens Dec. 15 along most of the Oregon coast.
Fishery managers made the decision today to open the ocean to crabbing along the Oregon coast from the Columbia River to just north of Gold Beach (42°26'00" N. Lat.). The ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon normally opens Dec. 1, but was delayed this year because crab did not meet minimum pre-season quality testing.
The testing measures the percentage of meat in the crab, by weight.

Thanksgiving around Carson City

Even though it remains among the least expensive holiday meal, the retail cost of menu items for a classic Thanksgiving dinner including turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the basic trimmings increased about 13 percent this year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
The Bureau’s annual Thanksgiving dinner price survey shows the average cost of 2011′s feast for 10 is $49.20, a $5.73 price increase from 2010’s average of $43.47. The survey shopping list includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10.
If you’re not in the mood to cook and want to enjoy the holiday without the work, a number of Carson City restaurants will offer traditional family dinners. Read more here on the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau blog.

Turkey Time

Thanksgiving is a time when good nutritional habits are broken. Sweets and foods with high fat content and of course the fitness structure that flies out the window when your guests walk in. Everywhere you turn you are inundated with food ads. All your extra time is spent in the kitchen cooking or in the grocery store buying more food. Most people over-buy on Thanksgiving and over-eat.

Bob and Lorraine (my cousin) Scholes of Dayton plus Elaine and I just returned from a six week vacation trip to Italy, Sicily and Switzerland. It was the Scholes’ second trip to Italy and our first-ever trip.
Lorraine’s father was born in Ponte Buggianese and my Dad was born in Lucca, and we both wanted to visit where our roots began.
We left on August 30, flew from Reno to Denver to Montreal to Rome and then returned from Rome to Zurich to San Francisco to Reno on October 12. Here are a bunch of our memories:

Movie Review: 'Friends with Benefits' breaks old ground, but Mila Kuinis is hot

At the Carson City Fandango Galaxy cineplex, I was a bit confused watching the new movie. Once I got the idea of the plot --- guy, girl agree to sex with no emotional strings attached, I thought I had been caught in a time warp. I'd seen this movie, only it was titled "No Strings Attached" and starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.
