Nuclear facility seismic study at UNR funded by Department of Energy
Submitted by editor on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 4:11pmThe seismic safety of nuclear facilities and systems will be examined in a new multi-year, multi-million dollar, federally funded project to study the influence of soil on building behavior during earthquakes. The University of Nevada, Reno’s world-renowned Structural Engineering Laboratories are at the center of the project that will first construct one of the world’s largest soil box/shake table systems, and then use it to investigate soil-structure interaction at a scale not previously possible.
Museum offers archeology program to children, families Saturday
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 9:39amThe Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s Family Fun Saturday program for July is “Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter,” for ages 10 through adult from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 11. No reservations needed.
The event is designed to allow visitors to gain appreciation for American Indian cultures of the Great Basin, with an emphasis on archaeological methods for learning about the ways people used shelters in the past.
Students at Online Charter School Give Back Through Service Projects

Each semester students study and learn leadership skills and at the end of the year put the learned skills into practice through a three-week Leadership Block. An essential characteristic of a principled leader is providing service and all students are required to give at least two hours of service to their community.

A Message From Downtown 2020: Carson City on its way to becoming walkable destination community

This took years of planning, relentless meetings with the Board of Supervisors and working with many different city agencies, City Planner, City Manager and engineers.
During this process there have been meetings with all the businesses and reaching out to the college and our high school to get them involved. We had public meetings where we listened and adapted your concerns to our plan for we understood that to be successful it takes a village.
Opinion: Time to set the colleges free

However, for months we have looked on with concern about our state's economic future and that of our students. Simply, the recently revised funding formula, with a goal of rectifying inequities between the two universities, has created budgetary chaos for the state's four community colleges.

With record-breaking temperatures, gusty winds and lightning anticipated for the next several days, residents should be prepared as well as visitors to the Carson City area, Schreihans said.

Carson City picked to host TEDx event in spring 2016

With the theme "Creating the Community you want to live in" Carson City will host TEDx, an education series and offshoot of the popular TED Talks programs, in spring 2016, those associated with the program said this week.
TEDxCarsonCity will be April 8, 2016 at the Brewery Arts Center's Performance Hall. It will be a daylong event, featuring 12 to 15 live speakers and five video guests that will broadcast from other TEDx events, said Gina Hill, who organized community members earlier this year to apply for a Carson City TEDx license. The committee submitted an application in April and learned Monday that it was approved.

Persons found in violation of the fireworks ordinance face criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period of up to six months.

If you have some time, head over to see one of the many art exhibits around town. The Nevada Artists Association has just switched up their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center and has a new summertime theme. Head over to the Community Center at 12:30 p.m. or at 5:30 p.m. to see what the designers have come up with for downtown. Your input is important in this phase of the planning, so make sure you bring your ideas!

Historical Society General Membership Meeting features State Archivist Jeffrey M. Kintop

The meeting will be in the private room at the northwest corner of the building. Jeffrey M. Kintop, State Archivist at the Nevada State Library and Archives, will discuss the 50th anniversary of the State Archives. Appointed State Archivist July 1, 2009, Kintop has worked at the Nevada State Library and Archives for 32 years.
