When Patricia Cabrera and her family walked through the doors Tuesday night, it was to a loud cheer from every crew member: “Welcome to McDonalds!”

Cabrera just so happened to be the first “official” customer of the new McDonalds on Winnie Lane and Carson Streets. She was among the 300 first customers, all of which received a free Big Mac per week for a year. Other prizes were given to customers as well: gift cards, coupons for free coffee, free ice cream cones. These gifts were the reason hundreds — well over that first 300 — lined up hours before the store officially opened at 6 p.m.

The McDonald's on Winnie Lane and Carson Street opened its doors early for a special crowd - the friends and families of its 70 new employees.

Sunday evening found the new facility packed full of customers (all of them somehow related to McDonald's employees) in preparation for the grand opening this upcoming Tuesday.

Hello fellow anglers, winter came back and stirred up the fishing. I now think that is behind us, for at least a week or so. This time of year never trust Mother Nature and always be prepared. I have been caught off guard back in the high country as well as an overnighter at Indian Creek Reservoir.

The IRS has warned repeatedly of a massive, sophisticated telephone scam. IRS warned of this scheme last October, then Feb. 27, 2014 and again March 20, 2014.

The scam is when victims are contacted by telephone and usually told they are entitled to big refunds or that they owe money that must be paid immediately to IRS.

“We have a fresh start and renewed optimism.” That’s what some are saying, but to me, with the increases in city service fees and the taxes voted in over the past 18 months the actions taken are intriguing and problematic.

Karen Abowd, Carson City Supervisor, Ward 1, hosts her monthly walkabout Friday, March 14 from noon to 1 p.m. at Mills Park. Everyone is invited to attend the event, which takes place the second Friday of each month.

“This gives the people an opportunity to openly discuss their concerns and ideas about a variety of topics impacting Carson City,” Abowd said. “More importantly, it keeps me in touch with where our constituency is coming down on these issues.”

I asked several downtown people what they think or feel about the passing of the 1/8th cent sales tax and what they see for Carson City’s future. The feelings are mixed, but the hope for an improved Carson City are united, the methods on how to do it have been up for discussion for many years and will be for many years to come.

The following was read at the Feb. 20, 2014 Board of Supervisors meeting. I said the following:

A Better Plan for Carson City

Now is the time for courage in leadership as we seek to secure financing and determine the timing of projects through a cooperative effort which will bring together the community, city staff and elected officials.

Let's ignore the 80/800 group of businesses in Carson City, for the moment, and consider meeting the 20/20 group in a compromise over the sales tax increase to pay for their proposed ten million dollar corridor improvements. Why not have them put up half the money of $5 Million ($250K each) and the city can match their investment for the remaining half? Let's all compromise and meet them halfway. If they are willing to put up their money, where our taxes are to be spent, then let hear it for compromise.

In 2012 the people of Carson City voted DOWN the ballot initiative CC #1 which called for a 1/8th cent hike in the sales tax, to be used for a new library and other development downtown, including the reduction of traffic on Carson Street from 4 to 2 lanes so as to make room for wider, more pedestrian friendly sidewalks or additional street parking or both.

I am adamantly opposed to the 1/8 cent tax increase to fund proposed city projects. I resent the efforts of city staff to “bundle” these projects, falsely represent them as necessary, and, by omission, deceive voters as to the true costs of these efforts. While at the work shop on January 21st, no one could tell me where the tax budget shortfall was for these projects, and there was no clearly demonstrable need.

Here is this week's fishing report of rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Jan. 1-7, 2014. Wednesday, Jan. 1 is opening day at Topaz Lake. More than 50,000 fish have been stocked by Nevada in advance of the opener.

Meetings have been established with two Carson City supervisors to discuss proposed downtown revitalization plans as well as building, improvements and infrastructure for Carson City through a proposed 1/8-cent sales tax.

Carson City's Forward group will meet today with Carson City Supervisor John McKenna, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Business Resource Innovation Center, BRIC, 108 E. Proctor St., Carson City.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, December 6 at 7:30 am at the Cracker Box restaurant. Any Carson City resident is invited to stop in.

At that last BOS meeting, a majority vote (Crowell, Abowd & Bonkowski) had approved the agenda item to revitalize all corridors, and build the MAC & Animal Shelter. However, after the vote staff had been directed not to pursue this as it was felt the votes would not be forthcoming when it came back to the Board.

With all the deferred infrastructure maintenance in our city, you would expect key projects to receive priority funding. Not so with the relatively new sidewalk in front of city public works facilities on the south side of Butti Way between Fairview and Airport.

This sidewalk serves virtually no one in a given day, probably cost taxpayers upwards of $200,000, and diverted funds from repairing crumbling sidewalks that serve many people.

The 2012 education PISA* rankings indicate that the USA came in at 25th for math, 14th for reading and 17th for science out of 30 countries with only three of those countries spending slightly more money per pupil than America. Yet the mantra for more money, benefits and taxes for education continue just as it has for the last sixty years. On Thursday at Noon, Occupy Carson City demonstrators, MoveOn.org members and homeowners in crisis will rally at the local Obama for America (OFA) office in Carson City, NV to demand that government-controlled mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac provide relief to ten million underwater homeowners by adjusting their mortgages to reflect the true value of their home.

Adele's is a Carson City landmark. This long-time restaurant — located in one of the oldest homes in town — attracts discriminating diners with its classical ambiance and reputation of its renown chef Charlie Abowd.

But now the restaurant is doing something new that will likely shake things up in Carson City early in the morning. They are serving breakfast.
