Lake Tahoe kicks off first stages of Amgen Tour of California

Organizers of the the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, announced today the Stage 1 and Stage 2 race routes for Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race as the official Overall Start is Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

Tahoe ranked No. 1 ski destination by Rand McNally

Lake Tahoe has been ranked the No. 1 ski destination for the year by Rand McNally, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority announced Monday.

The ranking is based on travel bookings to the destination when compared to other winter locations throughout the United States and Canada. It is the latest recognition given to the region by the nation's top travel writers and publications, according to the LTVA announcement.

Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau nets $14K in state tourism grants

The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded $14,000 in grants last week from the Nevada Commission on Tourism for three different marketing efforts, providing support for the destination’s Divine Nine Golf Co-operative, its own website and video production and advertising materials for the Virginia & Truckee Railway.

Ski season has changes in store at Heavenly Mountain Resort

With a new boss at Heavenly, onetime ski bum Pete Sonntag, things are humming there as they prepare for the upcoming season. I taught skiing there for several years and with all the new stuff and improvements going on I sometimes wish I were back on the hill there  — even if they never improve the ski school facilities are Boulder Base.

Sonntag is a real skier (and boarder) who was on the Vail demo team, so you can be sure he’ll be out on the hill checking things out himself.

Heavenly resort buys Accommodation Station at Lake Tahoe's south shore

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, whose parent company is Vail Resorts, announced today that it has acquired Accommodation Station, the third largest property management company in the South Lake Tahoe market.

Fire at the F.I.S.H. men's shelter

According to Gerie Stanko, director of development for F.I.S.H., "A smoldering electrical fire was discovered at 7:20 this morning at FISH's men's shelter, Focus House, on State of Nevada property in Carson City.

"Twenty-one male residents in the shelter have been displaced. Red Cross will provide 2-4 days of lodging. The fire inspector said that the building has to be re-wired which could exceed 30 days.
