Uncovering Nevada’s past is the topic for the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, March 20. Presented by Dennis Casinelli, club members will learn about artifacts that he discovered while growing up in Nevada and during his long career as a highway engineer for the Nevada Department of Transportation. He also founded Cassinelli Landscaping and Construction, which still serves Northern Nevada today.

This is the fourth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real incomes are lower now than in FY06. The third one noted Health and Social Services spending, the largest budget item, has grown most rapidly by far, driven greatly by federal health care mandates and funding.

At its Feb. 20 meeting, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized the outstanding work of the Capitol City C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Initiative with a $500 donation. Accepting the check for the organization were Shelly Aldean, co-founder and past president, and Program Manager Thomas Blake, Jr.

Nevada Humanities extended the deadline to Friday, March 1, 2019 at 5 p.m. to nominate an exceptional individual or organization for the 2019 Nevada Humanities Awards.

These awards are for outstanding achievement in, and contributions to, the humanities. Biannually, Nevada Humanities presents five awards recognizing individuals and organizations that foster cultural enrichment and deepen our understanding of the human experience by facilitating opportunities for Nevadans to engage with the humanities.

On Wednesday, February 20, Carson City Leisure Hour Club members will hear from C.I.R.C.L.E.S co-founder and former Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean about the exceptional work of C.I.R.C.L.E.S. She will be joined by Thomas Blake, Jr., C.I.R.C.L.E.S. program manager, for the presentation.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City recently appointed Benjamin Korn as its new Executive Director.

"We were delighted to extend an offer to Mr. Korn because he had extensive fundraising experience as well as an MA in Non Profit Arts Management" says Casey Gilles, Board President. "The museum's Board of Directors felt these two attributes made him an ideal candidate that would chart a new course for the museum involving increased resource development, enhanced constituent engagement, and a focus on revising the museum's collection."

No high school on the planet has as many events regularly happening as that of Carson High School, and one of the biggest of the year, Winterfest, begins Feb. 1. This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

At the end of the inauguration at the capitol building in Carson City on Monday, two mounted police horses took their well-earned break by sipping at the water trough located across from the festivities.

Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for the 2019 Nevada Reads program.

Throughout 2019, Nevada Reads will feature three books, two nonfiction memoirs and one novel:

Is the Leisure Hour Club going to the dogs? On Wednesday, Jan. 16, members of the Leisure Hour Club will learn about the exploits of the Carson City K-9 Unit, even meeting some of its members — both human and dog.

Carson City educators, students and families have stood together for the last few weeks in efforts to benefit schools in fire-devastated areas of northern California. All individuals involved learned lessons in kindness as well as how small efforts collectively may produce great and impactful outcomes.

Carson City School District has got to be one of the best places on earth to work, this coming from someone who has been here for 18 years. Some may call this hyperbole, but if someone actually took the time to do the research, he would find hyperbole is not the case as further evidence of this may be seen in the following letter written to all teachers within the school district by a friendly, kind, and professional Superintendent, Richard Stokes.

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Chris ‘CW’ Bayer will be entertaining the members of the Leisure Hour Club, Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. According to CW Bayer, he will be “singing and telling lies” for the Club during his performance.

Excitement abounds as teachers and students have been holding multiple events throughout Carson City this holiday season, everything from Christmas tree sales with CHS teacher and Adviser Ty McMillen’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes to the American Sign Language students of teacher Mary Anne Weaver putting on their Sign Me a Song Christmas production at the high school.

Today Nevada Humanities begins accepting nominations for the 2019 Nevada Humanities Awards for outstanding achievement in and contributions to the humanities.

Children often spend a lot of time indoors. In fact, “children spend on average less than one hour per day outside” according to the National Gardening Association. And yet, a connection to nature has significant developmental benefits for children.

Winners of the 91st National FFA Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event held in Indianapolis were announced at the annual awards banquet, and students Connor Arnold, Alexsandra Knowlton, Maritza Filson, and Hayden Story took home some medals.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, Dr. Vincent Solis, President of Western Nevada College, will share WNC’s vision for the future at the monthly Leisure Hour Club meeting. In recognition of the Club’s funding of scholarships at WNC, Niki Gladys, WNC’s Executive Director of Development, will also join Solis at the meeting.

Carson City High senior Jazlyn Duran puts her artistic passion to work this month for the benefit of the Carson City Senior Center and its Meals on Wheels program recipients, as she helps with the installation art donated by former Carson City artist, Carol Benson, for her senior project.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time every year touches the heart of one of the teachers at CHS: Art teacher Mike Malley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, due to early detection, has decided to take breast cancer awareness to a new level by putting on a fundraising event Oct. 18 at the Trimmer Barn from 5 to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Leisure Hour Club members will hear about Carson City’s lost history from local author and historian Peter Mires.

Club member and historian Kim Harris will help the Carson City Leisure Hour Club begin celebrating its 123-year history with a presentation at the Club’s first dinner meeting of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

“Open a New World,” the fifth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, will take place Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring an exploratory afternoon and evening of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops.

Primary and secondary education (K-12) has been the second fastest growing category of Nevada state spending over the past decade, rising from $1.24-billion in fiscal year 2006 (FY06) to $2.22-billion in FY17. It grew 33 percent faster than the incomes of Nevada families and businesses.

CARSON CITY, Nevada – The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of $50,000 in fellowship grants to Nevada artists and writers.

Carson City author Teri Case, who was raised on Tiger Drive and penned a novel by the same name "Tiger Drive," has won Best New Fiction with the 2018 American Fiction Awards for her work.

In recognition of Navy Week, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be open to the public for free all day on Tuesday, June 19 as its hosts the U.S. Navy Band Southwest Woodwind Quintet in a special performance from 2 to 3 p.m.

Chautauquan Tom Lorentzen will portray American author John Steinbeck at 6:30 p.m., followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada at 9:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 13 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Author Nancy Raven will speak on her book A Postal Journey: Discovering Nevada Through Its Post Offices at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m.

On May 16, the Leisure Hour Club recognized the outstanding work of the Carson City Literacy Volunteers with a $500 donation to the organization. Accepting the check for the Literacy Volunteers were Executive Director Jan Whitemore and Board member Sharon McCloskey.
