I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: July 23-24
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 07/22/2016 - 5:04pmI really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Continue reading for all that our valley has to offer.

Earwig is common pest that can be controlled; horrible campfire tale remains a myth
Submitted by editor on Sat, 06/25/2016 - 1:35pmPeople are asking about earwigs. Earwigs are easily recognized with rather alarming-looking pincers on their tail ends. These unappealing pests can devastate young vegetables, flowers, soft fruits or corn silks.
In spite of this, earwigs, believe it or not, are also beneficial. Being omnivores, they eat aphids, other insects, mites, nematodes, algae and fungi. They eat and break down organic matter, which includes dying and dead plants or ripened fruits.

Conversations with Land and Sky Oil paintings by Charles Muench
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 05/16/2016 - 11:51amPainting is my passion. Both the gothic shapes of the Eastern Sierra and the endless horizon of the Nevada High Desert inspire and inform my work.
My paintings are the result of a synesthetic dialog with the landscape. I cannot help but hear the colors of the high desert in the mid-summer sun, smell the grandeur of the Sierra peaks rising above the alpine autumn twilight, and touch the expanse of vast, open spaces on a cold, winter evening.

Column: Controlling Worms in Apples Begins Now

Worms in apples are the larvae of codling moths. These relatives of butterflies also attack pears, plums and walnuts. Each female moth lays 30 to 70 tiny disc-shaped eggs singly on the fruit, spurs or nearby leaves. After hatching, the white to light pink “worms” with dark heads bore into the fruit.
