Bill requests give peek at Nevada governor’s agenda ahead of State of the State
Submitted by editor on Mon, 01/02/2017 - 1:48pmCARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval is preparing for his last regular legislative session that will culminate the efforts of his administration and define the mark he leaves as Nevada’s 29th chief executive.
The two-term Republican, in typical fashion, is keeping details of his legislative agenda and two-year budget proposal secret until he delivers his last State of the State address on Jan. 17.
Coffee-ring phenomenon explained in new theory developed by UNR researchers
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/20/2016 - 12:21pmThe formation of a simple coffee stain has been the subject of complex study for decades, though it turns out that there remain some stones still to be turned. Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have modeled how a colloidal droplet evaporates and found a previously overlooked mechanism that more accurately determines the dynamics of particle deposition in evaporating sessile droplets, which has ramifications in many fields of today’s technological world.
Deep Thoughts, Cheap Shots and Bonbons: A Look Back at the Vintage Project
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 12/19/2016 - 4:23pmPrior to the 2 pm Vintage Project meeting, I requested that this agenda item be moved to an evening session so that citizens could have a better chance to attend and address the Board.
The Mayor asked for a motion, as usual my fellow Board members all refused to agree with me. Based upon this non-action by the Board, an outside observer might then assume that the Vintage Project could not have any adverse effect on our community whatsoever, because the need to give citizens a better opportunity to have a voice had no merit with Board members Crowell, Abowd and Bagwell.
JoAnne Skelly: Give a Living Christmas Tree
Submitted by editor on Sun, 12/18/2016 - 9:04amHere’s another take on gift giving. Give a living Christmas tree in a pot that your gift receiver can plant in their yard after Christmas. If you give a tree, include these tips. While indoors, check the moisture content of the root ball daily. Water it when the top two inches of soil feels dry.

Santa Train, Railroad Museum making special delivery for cancer patients
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Wed, 12/14/2016 - 5:23pmThe one thing scarier for a child than not being home at Christmas is to be fighting cancer at the same time.
But it's a reality for a number of Northern Nevada children and their families this year.
Dream Center serves up Christmas dinner, caring in Carson City
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Thu, 12/08/2016 - 11:48amAt the end of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," Ebenezer Scrooge surprises the humble Cratchit family with a prize turkey for Christmas dinner. Although that story is fiction, the Northern Nevada Dream Center's (NNDC) annual Dream Christmas dinner event in Carson City is not.
What Works: The most important gift on your list is the one to yourself
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/06/2016 - 11:06amThere are 19 days until Christmas. The holiday season is in full swing. Trees are going up. Houses are getting decorated. Shopping happens between kids’ activities and holiday family fun. Making sure all the presents are well hidden is a feat within itself! Yet there is one gift that sometimes gets forgotten. That gift is the gift you give to yourself.

Facts about Sales Tax
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 11/05/2016 - 11:49amLet's put this silly claim by my opponent that he's the voice of reason to rest and use his supposed opposition to the 1/8th city sales tax hike to do it.
With the city Supervisor seat from Ward 4 in the balance, Jim Shirk once again wants to have things both ways in typical politician fashion by saying he voted against the sales tax hike and opposed the downtown Carson Street project, yet he leaves out important details about his voting record and value received.
As his opponent, I'm duty bound to point out the following:
JoAnne Skelly: Avoid wormy apples or pears next year
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 11:31amThe apple harvest is almost over. We have picked so many red delicious apples at our house, we don’t care there are still some on the tree. I had thought a freeze in late May had destroyed all the flowers. Surprise! The recent winds have blown down many of the apples remaining on the tree.

Bad Reputation, Good for Environment: Creepy bats essential to healthy Nevada ecosystems
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/27/2016 - 1:08pmAs we head toward Halloween on Monday we think about all the scary creatures often associated with the celebration. It’s easy to come up with scary thoughts about things that go bump in the dark, and unfortunately, a lot of people think of bats as that bump in the dark. You might be surprised, however, to learn that nearly everything you thought about bats is incorrect and they are actually extremely important to the success of Nevada’s ecosystems.

JoAnne Skelly: Miracle Broccoli Sprouts
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 10/15/2016 - 11:09amI just finished reading “The Secret Power of Broccoli” by Peg Herring for Oregon State University’s Agricultural Progress magazine.
I already knew that broccoli and its relatives (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, arugula, collards, radish, turnips and others) were high in antioxidants. They provide important essential nutrients and help to reduce the risk of various cancers.
I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: Oct. 15 - 16
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 10/14/2016 - 6:49pmI’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.
