Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

Our citizenship class provides the civics knowledge and English language skills needed to pass the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalization interview.

Citizenship preparation classes are sponsored by the ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada. These classes are available at all proficiency levels and at no cost to the student.

Spanish Language Controller’s Reports, Interns and Progress

A few months ago, we decided the Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) should be published in Spanish, as well as English.

As a rule, we think most government documents shouldn’t be rendered in languages other than English. It’s expensive and difficult to do, and in most cases the social value is not great when there are public employees or friends and relatives to help folks with limited English skills.

Nevada Hindu leader to open Pennsylvania, Rhode Island Senates Houses with Hindu prayers

Pennsylvania and Rhode Island Senates and Houses of Representatives will open their June 19 and 20 sessions respectively in Harrisburg and Providence with Hindu mantras, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Reno based Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the Senates and Houses of these states. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English interpretation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

English as a Second Language workshop in Minden

People who want to help break the language barrier by teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) are invited to attend a free tutor orientation and training workshop on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Training is from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. in the Pine Nut Room of the Douglas County Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden. Light snacks will be served.

The commitment to tutor a non-English speaking person is 1-2 hrs/week according to your schedule. There are adult learners waiting for help with speaking, reading and writing English.

Carson City Schools Foundation awards teachers with $200 Mini-Grants
