Holiday Crawl draws hundreds, raises money for program giving Carson City kids a Christmas

The Carson City community held its third annual Holiday Crawl Benefit 2017 on Saturday to raise money for the Holiday with a Hero campaign that gives local homeless children a chance to shop for themselves and family for Christmas. The downtown Carson City event was attended by more than 400 people, up about 100 from last year, organizers say.

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign is officially underway. The goal is to give at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a holiday gift to remember by presenting them with a $100 gift card to spend during a special shopping spree at Walmart.

Carson City School District on tap to receive $1.38 million for Read by Grade 3 program

The Carson City School District will receive $1.38 million in funding for third phase of the Read by Grade 3 program, also known as RBG3, the Nevada Department of Education announced Friday. Lyon County School District is on tap to receive $671,825 in funding, and Douglas County School District, $655,182.

New vice principals named at Carson City schools

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of four new vice principals for the 2017-2018 school year: Mrs. Michelle Cleveland at Bordewich Bray Elementary, Mrs. Chelise Crookshanks at Carson Middle School (CMS), Mrs. Julie Cowan at Al Seeliger Elementary and Mrs. Cheryl Richetta at Fremont Elementary School.

A number of projects are on the agenda this year for the Carson City School District, not the least of which is a district-wide refit with energy-efficient improvements designed to give substantial annual savings back to the community over the next two decades, CCSD Operations Director Mark Korinek said.

A collaboration of agencies and organizations officially kicked off the 2016 Holiday with a Hero campaign on Wednesday with a goal of giving at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a Christmas experience by providing them gift cards to spend on themselves prior to the holiday.

How beautiful it is when businesses and individuals in the Carson City community give not only their time, but also their resources and services to educate and, in many instances, provide some type of financial benefit for the students of Carson City.

When the Carson City School District learned it would receive funding through a competitive grant program authorized by Nevada’s Read by Grade 3 Act, it came up with an innovative summer reading program to help its English Language Learner population. Carson City Parks and Recreation Youth Programs partnered with the Salvation Army to start up a school supply donation drive. Our Summer Camp children and families have now helped us fill 5-plus large bins with school supplies and backpacks.
