Senator Square: Peter Garrett goes All-American

Every high school athlete’s dream: to be named an All-American in their sport. To do this, one would have to participate in an organized All-American game.

For Carson High senior Peter Garrett, his soccer dreams are being lived in early December, when he will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, from the 1-4.

“It’s called the All-American High School Soccer Game,” Garrett proudly claimed.

He led his team to the state championship last season against Wooster and is training for this event by working hard during the high school soccer season.

“The coaches and staff from the match nominate people from each state, and I was the only kid from Nevada; then a month goes into looking over your records, and from there they select the top 20 players from the east and the west, and I was one of the selections,” Garrett said with a grin.

At first, Garrett said he did plan on playing soccer in college, but was not sure where yet. With further consideration, he finally said, “San Diego State that would be great.”

CHS Speech and Debate

A formidable 29 CHS students participated in the Reno Speech and Debate Tournament last weekend, picking up 48 top-three winning ballots.

Caden Thomas Barton took 7th and a first time advancing to final round in novice humorous interpretation with his piece “Behind the Puppet Stand.” Speech captain Shane Morton placed 2nd in senior humorous interpretation with his satirical “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and Juliet Favero placed 2nd in senior Program Oral Interpretation with her cutting of literature and poetry on the theme of mercy and justice. Emerson Spence placed 3rd in his novice congressional debate chamber, marking his first top-three finish as a debate competitor, and team captain Sawyer Barnett placed 3rd in senior Lincoln Douglas debate, 2nd in speaker points, and 2nd in senior impromptu speaking. Jessica Preston finished 9th in novice impromptu and 1st in her Congressional debate chamber, earning her a 1st in speaker points with perfect scores in all her speeches. Co-captain Evan Cherpeski took 8th in novice impromptu speaking and 3rd in speaker points in senior Lincoln Douglas debate.

The team thanks Carson Endodontics for being a season-long sponsor, and they look forward to the November tournament at Wooster High School as well as the upcoming Poetry Out Loud competition.

CHS Cheer Team Past and Present

The CHS Cheer Team is in the Nevada Day Parade, and the theme is "Nevada: Then and Now,” so the Cheer Team is looking for Carson High Alumni Cheerleaders from the past to ride the float or loan their cheer uniform to be displayed on the float. Who Will Be the CHS Faculty Pink Princess Fairy?

Funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and the Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation are continuing to be raised during the month of October.

HOSA members are selling Breast Cancer Awareness items pink ribbon lanyards and hacky sacks for $3, and four different writing pens with fun sayings for $1 each. All monies raised go to the CTCF. Items may also be purchased from Mrs. Gustafson in room 206.

HOSA officers are also asking students, faculty, and community members to vote for who they want to be Faculty Pink Princess Fairy: Mr. Kortemeir, Mr. Mital, Mr. Mobley, Mr. Sakelarios, Mr. Quilling or Mr. Glover. The winning teacher will be dressed up in pink tights, fairy wings and tiara on Oct. 31. Voting is taking place through Oct. 27 by placing spare change and bills in the collection bins found in the participating teachers' classrooms or at lunch in Senator Square. Questions? Recycled Art Contest Submissions Due Today

The 2016 Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program’s Statewide Recycled Art Contest is in its third year. Nevada residents from kindergarten to adults, to students working on a class project, may participate.

First place receives $250, second place $100, third place $50, and $200 goes to winners of the class project. Submissions are due today, and winners, selected by panel, will be announced on or before America Recycles Day, November 15, 2016.

Student of the Week

Eleisly Sanchez-Pardo is a wonderful student at CHS. She is very unique in that she is fluent with Spanish and English. She is a dedicated student, always being on time and prepared to learn. CHS is filled with thanks for all she has done and continues to do for CHS.

Senior Spotlight

CHS is pleased to recognize Makaela Bigley as this week’s senior in the spotlight.

Makaela has a weighted GPA of 4.7 and is currently continuing her academic pursuits with a full load of classes, five of which are AP. Makaela is a National Honor Society member and is on the CHS soccer team, track team, and cross country team. Makaela has been very active in SkillsUSA and is currently the chapter president. Last year she competed in Architectural Drafting, and won the state level. She attended the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky, where she placed 16th in the nation.

Outside of school, Makaela’s passion is ultrarunning (running farther than a marathon). She has participated in the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Race twice, which is a 55k run and takes her a little over 8 hours to complete. Makaela has volunteered and helped organize runs to support various service organizations including Special Olympics, Guide Dogs of America, and the Mountain Bike Patrol.

In addition to running, Makaela enjoys traveling and has traveled throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas.

Makaela is planning to pursue a college degree in architectural engineering and is applying to numerous colleges including Penn State, Purdue University, the University of Colorado, Boulder, the University of Virginia, UNR, and the University of Utah.

CHS is proud of the contributions Makaela has made to Carson High School and its community, and looks forward to the future accomplishments of this talented student.
