Downtown Carson City lights up for Christmas

Downtown Carson City celebrated the start of the holiday season with the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.

Streets were closed off as throngs of people gathered in front of the state capitol to watch as the lights for the two giant Christmas trees were turned on.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the back of an antique fire truck, with Mayor Bob Crowell riding shotgun. After the state's trees were turned on, the crowd headed over to the First Presbyterian Church where the city's Christmas tree was turned on.

So, if you were not part of that frenzied mob scene on the day after Thanksgiving, or if you are still scratching your head about what to get for that person, here are some “Don Q” suggestions for Christmas gifts:
Any one or more of these could create a very enjoyable Christmas.

Charlie Abowd's Thanksgiving Recipe for a great dinner

As the holiday season begins, Karen and I are taking time to remember how much our community has come through — the challenges and sadness it has faced, and the grace and strength with which we've responded.

Karen and I enjoy Thanksgiving because it's a time to gather family and friends and take a moment to count our blessings. I invite everyone to look around, see where help is needed and take a moment, too.

Outdoors with Don Q: Some information about Barrow, Alaska

November 18 is a very significant date in the lives of several thousand hardy Alaskans. Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.
It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
On November 18, the sun sets below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 24 (weather permitting).
That’s more than two months without sunshine. Wow!

Don Q Outdoors: Six more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many nearby California waters will close to
fishing on November 15…that’s this coming Tuesday.

That’s only six days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better
hustle because you are running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year
(April 28, 2012), and that is a long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

After losing money for the last three years, the Arlington Ice Rink in downtown Carson City is expected to pay for itself. Joel Dunn, operations manager for Carson City Parks and Recreation, told the Parks and Recreation Commission yesterday that the city's purchase of the rink equipment and rental skates will help close the $100,000 in red ink the operation has posted in previous years. He also expects to increase revenue by 29.2 percent by extending the season two weeks and adding new session packages.

Hoyl kept hammering until another competitor - a doctor - stepped up to stop him before he lost too much blood.

Outdoors with Don Q: Memories from an unforgettable six week adventure

Bob and Lorraine (my cousin) Scholes of Dayton plus Elaine and I just returned from a six week vacation trip to Italy, Sicily and Switzerland. It was the Scholes’ second trip to Italy and our first-ever trip.
Lorraine’s father was born in Ponte Buggianese and my Dad was born in Lucca, and we both wanted to visit where our roots began.
We left on August 30, flew from Reno to Denver to Montreal to Rome and then returned from Rome to Zurich to San Francisco to Reno on October 12. Here are a bunch of our memories:

Movie Review: 'The Thing' doesn't live up to past version

The movie "The Thing," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is labeled by its creators as "prequel" to the 1982 film that is rated as a classic sci-fi horror film. Too bad this prequel doesn't have the hard-edged script and at least some science to back up some of the more dubious scenes. (Two other versions of the same story have been made and forgotten.)

Carson Station celebrates grand re-opening with wing cookoff

There were wings everywhere, of all types and flavors; the garlic parmesan seemed to be getting the best reviews from the crowd. There were four types of beer on tap (at a dollar apiece it was easily the best deal in town) and all of them were ice cold. For another dollar, one could buy a "walking taco": a small bag of Doritos, crushed and covered with meat, cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce and salsa, eaten right out of the bag.

Reflections on 8th Burning Man visit

By Sam Bauman
First time I went to Burning Man on the Black Rock playa, I slept in my SUV. Not bad but second and third it was in my tent, a very gritty and uncomfortable week. Fourth I weaseled my way into a friend's a fold-out trailer, which was better. But from then on I teamed up with a retired airline pilot, who had a nice 27-foot Winnebago. Four of us the first three times, just two the last.
