Outdoors with Don Q: A little bit of everything for everyone

There is a special place in this part of the Far West where there is a little bit of everything for everyone, every day of the year. Are you interested?
Well, if you are, be sure to plan to stop at Wiggins’ Trading Post located in Chilcoot, Calif. You won’t regret stopping.
Wiggins’ Trading Post is located on California S.R. 70, about seven miles west of Hallelujah Junction on U.S. 395, and it is the gateway to Frenchman Reservoir (about eight miles north).
That unique store is owned by Richard (Dick) and Shirley Wiggins, and they have been there since way back in 1968.

Ocean, Earth atmosphere addressed at Thursday lecture

The study of climate change through Earth history has produced a wealth of information on the operation of the ocean-atmosphere system during climate transitions as well as the feedbacks that impact the magnitude and rate of climate change on the planet. A public lecture on Thursday at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences will address some of what has been found.

Movie Reivew: '21 Jump Street' basic teen fare, but fun for all

The action-comedy film "21 Jump Street," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, may seem a little familiar to those who saw the teen comedy "Project X" recently. And for good reason, the writer for both films was Michael Bacall. There's much of the same in both films, high school affairs drugs and teen mammoth parties.

But don't let that spook you, as bad as "Project X" was, "21 Jump Street" is loud and funny and has two fine leads, Jonah Hill as Schmidt and Channing Tatum as Jenko. In high school Schmidt was the goofball and Jenko the football star.

Utah angler catches record tiger trout

Last week — after a day of fishing at Scofield Reservoir in central Utah—an excited Trent Peery dropped by the Division of Wildlife Resources' office in Springville.
A resident of Santaquin, Peery stopped by the office to ask fisheries biologists to measure a gigantic tiger trout he caught earlier that day.
Peery was hoping the trout would break the existing Utah state record held by Michael Moon.

According to Carson City Parks and Recreation, the rink has hosted 9,469 skaters this season, an increase of 16.4 percent over this time last year.

The department said they rescheduled the closing date because of a decline in participation.

"With our region's unseasonably warm weather we are finding families enjoying other outdoor recreational activities," read a statement sent out by the department.

Movie Review: 'The Descendants' offers a fine cast headed by George Clooney

The Academy Award nominated film "The Descendants," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy movie house in Carson City, is a hard-eyed romantic comedy with an ensemble cast headed by George Clooney, the only name star aboard.
Doesn't matter, this is a fine cast from Clooney as Matt King to Judy Greer as Julie Speer, wife of a real estate salesman who … but let's let that wait.
The film opens with a scene of an attractive woman riding a boat. She's laughing in the wind. This is before an of the opening credits. No explanation given or needed.

Outdoors with Don Q: Things you need to know about ice fishing

With the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
And, that ice covering effectively inhibits your opportunity to catch fish…unless you are an ice fisherman.

Fishing report through Jan. 25

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:

Outdoors with Don Q: Sunshine finally returns to Barrow, Alaska

This is almost a repeat of a story written back in November but with a different twist and some additional details.
Enjoy: Late January is a very special time of the year in the lives of about four thousand, hardy Alaskans.
They live in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost community in the U.S.
It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, 725 airline miles north of Anchorage and 1,122 miles from the North Pole.

Another lunchtime distraction

The unusual winter weather has been a boon for ice skaters. Here some skaters take to the ice on Tenaya Lake in Yosemite National Park. This area is normally under several feet of snow at this time of year and likely has never been conducive to ice skating. Hat tip to Sierra Foothills Report.

Family identifies victim of Lake Tahoe area ice climbing accident

UPDATE: 9:15PM: A 23-year-old Bay Area man who died on Saturday after slipping on ice and plunging about 150 feet near Cascade Falls, has been identified by family members as Michael James Machell of El Cerrito, Calif.

Cold ice means hot fishing

Winter is one of the best times to catch fish. Just because it's cold doesn't mean it's time to put your fishing gear away. In fact, if you put your gear away now, you might miss some of the best fishing of the year.
Catching bluegill through the ice is a fun thing to do in Utah in the winter.
That's right—those "crazy" people you see standing on the ice at waters across Utah aren't so crazy after all.
They know a layer of cold ice means hot fishing in the water under the ice.

Confusion over holiday hours for Arlington Square Ice Rink

My family went ice skating yesterday (everyone except me, because I would probably break something). But it was quite a sight to see three generations out on the ice together.

However, there was a problem. My wife used Google to find out what times the skating rink was open, and got that information from the DowntownCarsonCity.com website.

Unfortunately, those times are wrong. They are from last year, as that site hasn't been updated since then. The current holiday schedule for the ice rink is here.

Session start at 10 a.m. on weekends, not 3 p.m. as it says on the DowntownCarsonCity.com site. With the warm weather, this makes a big difference because by later in the afternoon, the ice can get pretty chopped up.

So enjoy the ice skating while it lasts. It's the only real sign of winter we have around here so far this year.

Take advantage of the warm weather with outside activities

The unseasonable warm weather around Carson City makes it ideal to get out and take advantage of some of the area’s outdoor activities including ice skating, hiking, mountain biking and golf. Check out the latest blog from the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
