A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested early Sunday for suspicion of domestic battery after allegedly spraying her roommate with pepper spray in the face during an argument, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Hundreds of children, parents, business and community leaders will join the Nevada Afterschool Network today, Thursday, for a Lights On Afterschool rally at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada in Carson City.

With over 450 responses received over six weeks, the results of the downtown retail/restaurant recruitment survey show that survey participants want a diverse consumer experience, while maintaining local familiarity.

Street Vibes and the Candy Dance are always the endcap to September. Arts and crafts take over the small hamlet of Genoa this weekend; get a jump on your holiday gift list. All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. Whether it’s in Carson City, or just over the hill in one of our neighboring counties, you’ll find something fun to do. Read on.

Families unite Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City for the first-ever Northern Nevada Family Fun Day, a community event featuring live music, workshops, shopping, raffles, a Kids Zone, giveaways, raffles and more.

There will be rock climbing demonstrations, face painting, pirates, obstacle courses, a bubble station, music, a photo booth, ice cream, refreshments beginning at 11 a.m. and running until to 9 p.m.

Whether you scent your linens, buy perfumed soaps, add it as a food flavoring, make essential oils or simply enjoy its flowers, lavender is a garden delight. On a warm summer morning, you will find it covered in bees collecting nectar and pollen. Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as English lavender, is the hardiest species for our area.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. I hope you like live music, Carson City, because tonight you’ve got plenty of it. No matter what your style, there is someone for you. Take the kids to the Nevada State State Train Museum for Lucky Diamond and the Gents of Jive or to the McFadden Plaza for an outdoor concert with Musicole. Leave the kids with a sitter if you’re going to head to Living the Good Life for some outdoor fun with CV-41 or inside the Westside Pour House with reggae group Whiskey Lung. A to Zen has a store-wide scavenger hunt to accompany their weekly open Mic.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

Living in the dusty, dry high desert means that we escape cancerous car rot. Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

Did you miss the Community Art Night last month? Never fear, Artsy Fartsy and the Charlie B Art Galleries are teaming up again for a night of art, food trucks, and more in Telegraph Square downtown. Dress as your favorite superhero for Gardnerville’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk. Enjoy ice cream and a concert by the Capital City Community Band at the First United Methodist Church on Musser St. Close out the evening with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Come to the Red Hut Cafe in Carson City from 3 to 7pm to meet Miss Lake Tahoe, Briana Neben and help her to raise funds for our local Children's Miracle Network hospital as she prepares to compete for Miss Nevada 2016. All proceeds will go to Renown Children's Hospital and will help to create miracles for the children and their families. This event is held on Briana's 23rd birthday, so come join the celebration!

I should not have done it, but old habits, and common sense, die hard. Carson Street is the main drag through town, always was, always will be, for going between the north and south sides of town. Just look on the map. There are no through-street alternatives that run the length of town, from College Parkway to Clearview Drive; only fragments, most of which are residential.

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

Plane lovers and history buffs are in for a treat today. A rare B-17 bomber is making a stop at the Carson City Airport and will be available for rides and tours. Dancers can choose from country line dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita. Capital Eats inside of Westside Pour House just started a Tuesday night Basque dinner, but you’ll want to call for reservations and information on this week’s menu. Get your wing fix Firkin and Fox: it’s all you can eat chicken wings today. Save room for dessert, though, National Ice Cream Cone Day is worth celebrating.

Oktoberfest, the yearly celebration of all things German, will have a taste of California on the shores of Lake Tahoe at Camp Richardson Historic Resort and Marina Oct. 3-4.

This popular annual event will feature German beers brewed here in the Golden State. Saint Archer Brewery of San Diego created a beer infused bratwurst exclusively for the event with its IPA. And another San Diego firm, Ballast Point’s Longfin Lager will be on pour.
