Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated. Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. The hills have been dusted with a little bit of snow, and we are keeping our fingers crossed for more. Judith Ames has the hosting duties at this week’s Living the Good Life Jazz Jam. Dance it up at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes - Jeremy McGuigan serves as guest DJ. The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus brings their winter concert, “BRRRoque Masters” to the Shepherd of the Sierra Church at the south end of town; those under 18 are invited to listen without an admission fee.

I don’t want to jinx anything, but there are rumors of wet stuff on the way. Granted, the valley will probably just see some rain, but I love seeing our mountains snow-capped. The Epic Rides’ Carson City Off-Road race isn’t until June, but locals can sign up tonight at a nice discount. Teens can find a little peace and quiet with the new Meditation Group that meets at A to Zen. Learning to calm your mind can be an invaluable tool during the school year.

It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

I hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of 2017. While the Carson City Library is getting a much-needed refresh, you'll find limited services at the Adams Hub on Proctor. Get your fill of twinkling holiday lights while you can, the displays at Carson Valley Inn and at Nevada Christmas only run through Friday night.

WEDNESDAY: Dec. 27

On a morning like this, I realize that I need to ask Santa for some windshield wipers. Stay safe out there, Carson City, the roads are wet. The Carson Library is usually a great place to retreat on days like this, but you’ll find their doors closed for the next few weeks: time for a makeover. If you’d like to check out a book or use the wireless internet, you’ll find a ‘pop-up’ library in the Community Center this week, and in the Adams Hub on Proctor Street next week.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

Welcome to Wednesday. If you haven’t had a chance to tell Ole’ Nick what you’d like to see under the tree, then wander over to Red’s Old 395 for a complementary picture and a moment on his lap. See what our local crafters and artisans have to offer at the Christmas Craft Show inside Carson Mall. It’s karaoke night at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge for those over 18. Friday, the capital city hosts the Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting Celebration, as well as the very yummy Empty Bowls Soup Fest. Saturday, in addition to Carson City’s monthly downtown wine walk and the annual Holiday with a Hero Crawl, Minden holds its annual Christmas Parade.

Ready for the long weekend filled with friends, family, and food? Get in the celebratory spirit with some live jazz at Living the Good Life or country dancing at Carson Lanes. If you’re over 18, you are welcome to check out the karaoke party at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge. A young wizaard discovers his destiny on the big screen; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at Fandango’s Galaxy Theater is a perfect family-friendly outing.

It has been said that those who can’t ‘do,’ teach. ‘Inspirations,’ the newest art exhibit in the Community Development Building by City Hall, proves that adage a lie. At the reception tonight, you’ll get the chance to meet regional art teachers that are still practicing their passion.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. While you’ll always find a jazz jam at Living the Good Life and karaoke at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge on Wednesdays, today offers some special choices. Choose Applebee’s for lunch or dinner and you’ll notice that your server looks suspiciously like a law enforcement officer. The Tip-a-Cop fundraiser benefits the athletes of the Special Olympics. Find some holiday treasures at the Carson City Senior Center. Unique Crafters Holiday Fair in their thrift shop showcases hand-crafted gifts by area seniors. Welcome to November, Carson City. 2017 is plugging right along: summer is behind us and the holiday season is on its way. Take a breath and enjoy this moment of autumn. Get your dose of jazz at Living the Good Life. This week’s jam is led by Tom Stryker’s Impromptu. The Westside Pour House invites you to their first mid-week karaoke night, and ladies will be treated to drink specials. Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge brings the boys of J and M Productions into the house every Wednesday for an over 18 karaoke party.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first. The kids aren’t going to want to miss out on the Carson City Boo-nanza: trick or treating at the Community Center, crafts and activities at the Library, and Hotel Transylvania on the screen at the Aquatic Center. DJ Trivia is looking to expand their team of Trivia-masters: head to Red’s Old 395 tonight if you’d like to audition, or just play.

Well, that was an abrupt change in weather. Today will definite feel like fall, so bundle up. The Halloween festivities for the over 21 crowd get started tonight with parties at Living the Good Life, Ed's Doghouse, and Jimmy G's Cigar Bar. If your costume isn't ready yet, you'll still have plenty of opportunities between now and Oct. 31. A hypnotic fundraiser for Mark Lindquist takes place at Silver Oak Golf Course this evening.

You’re almost out of time to enjoy the ART from UNR display in the Community Development Building behind Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. If you attend the Capital City Arts Initiative's Nevada Neighbors talk tonight, you’ll have plenty of time to check it out. CCAI has invited curator Michele Quinn to present an illustrated talk on the rising art scene in Las Vegas.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

Air quality around our area is fairly poor, due to the multiple fires in Northern California, so indoor activities are recommended for anyone having a hard time with the smoke. Luckily, Carson City has just the ticket. Get your jazz on at Living the Good Life; Cherie Shipley is hosting tonight’s jam. Kick up your heels during country line dance lessons at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes. You’ll learn something new every Tuesday and Wednesday night. Pizza is on the menu for dinner tonight.

You’ll need to share the road this morning. It’s the Nevada Walk to School Day and more kids will be walking and biking their way through your neighborhood. Virginia City is in for a crappy weekend, but they asked for it. The annual Outhouse Races begin with a parade down C Street at noon both days. Learn more about our local Sherriff’s Department today during ‘Coffee with a Cop’ at Dunkin Donuts. Join the Carson Library this evening for their family movie and craft.

Street Vibrations is a celebration of all things motorcycle, but today the only cycle that truly matters is the three-wheeled one that belongs to Glen Lucky. A lot of towns have local celebrities; most everyone has seen Glen Lucky on the side of the road, pushing his bike to take him further. Today, the Nevada State Museum invites everyone to help Lucky celebrate his 65th birthday, complete with cake and a huge group photo.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like autumn; it’s time to pull those scarves and sweaters out of the closet. Speaking of chilly, let Chili’s Restaurant take care of dinner tonight and you’ll be lending a hand to Bordewich Elementary School – just make sure to mention the ‘Give Back’ fundraiser. Sacramento arts administrator, Dianne Cripe, will speak about public art as part of the Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series, ‘Nevada Neighbors.’ You’ll find poet J. Paul Horgan at Browser’s Corner Book Store, across the street from the Library.

Ready to head back to school, Carson City? The entire community is invited to attend the Open House Open Hearts Community Fair at Carson High School this evening. You’ll be treated to performances from our talented students, yummy treats created by the CHS Culinary students, and a plethora of information from community services like the library and Boys and Girls Club. Wheeled Food Wednesdays at the Brewery Arts Center is contingent on nice weather, so it’s too early to tell if the rain clouds will cooperate.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. If you’ve never been to the annual International Camel Races, you’ve been missing out. Keep reading, there’s something for everyone on this list. Find your fun.

Six years ago, shots rang out and Carson City was thrust into the middle of a tragedy. Four people died in the IHOP shooting, three of them National Guard members. Today, they will be honored again during the annual Remembrance Run. If you are driving along Fairview, please give them some extra room. Wheeled Truck Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center is a ‘weather permitting’ event, so keep your eye out for rain clouds.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. The middle of the week may be known as hump day, but the Brewery Arts Center wants it to be something to look forward to. Wheeled Food Wednesday features family fun, community, and plenty of yummy eats from local food trucks. It’s generally thought that Carson City was named after Kit Carson, but that’s only partially true. The Carson River was named for the explorer, while Carson City was named for the river that runs through it. Learn more about this important high desert watershed at Dayton State Park.

I’m really hoping for rain. Unfortunately, rain brings thunder and lightning with it, and we are already suffering the effects of lightning. Thanks and praises to the men and women fighting the fire in Voltaire Canyon and for all of your hard work keeping those neighborhoods safe. Smoke may be bad around the valley, so find something indoors to enjoy: our plethora of art exhibits and galleries offer up something beautiful.
