The entrepreneur-turned-humorist ought to know. Even though Samuel Clemens failed miserably at both mining and logging ventures in Nevada, he gave getting rich his best shot. Twain well understood the appetite Americans have for money — and how far those who want a slice of the supply chain pie are willing to go in order to get it.
It’s the same ambitious impulse a recent Seattle Business article identified when it said, “Marijuana entrepreneurs are lining up to cash in.”

Participation in Carson City's local Green Zone Initiative push has more than doubled since the first meeting called together by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong on Feb. 10.

More than two dozen people attended Wednesday's meeting of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC), the local branch of the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a program introduced by the Governor's Interagency Council on Veterans Affairs.

Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Members of a community advisory panel met Wednesday to adopt a local charter for the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a statewide effort to bring veteran service providers and other community stakeholders together in a pooling of resources that would make access easier for the state's veteran population.

The panel approved making Carson City one of 10 community green zone councils across the state, calling its local initiative the Carson City Area Veterans Community Council (CCAVCC).

Founding father Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has identified a problem in the state capital, and he has proposed a way to solve it, taking Franklin’s advice to heart.

“There are a ton of veterans in this town that no one knows they’re here,” Furlong told a panel of community members Thursday afternoon at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, making specific note of the problem of homelessness among Carson City’s veteran population.

Aqua Metals, Inc., which is commercializing a non-polluting electrochemical lead recycling technology called AquaRefining, announced Friday a $10 million loan from Green Bank in conjunction with a 90 percent loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Agency for the development of its first AquaRefinery.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Sept. 2, 2015 through Labor Day. This Saturday the California Department of Fish and Game is hosting the second of two annual free fishing days.

Last week I wrote about root weevils eating leaves. This week’s pests are the elm leaf beetles. While elms are hardy drought tolerant trees for arid Nevada, they are plagued by elm leaf beetles every year. By this time of year, the trees look half-dead with white to brown ragged leaves.

Don’t give up, on life or your dreams
There is a part in the movie “Tin Cup” where Kevin Costner’s character refuses to quit.
Professional golfer Roy McAvoy is on the 18th fairway in the final round of the U.S. Open, trying to clear the ominous water hazard separating him from the green.
His first ball falls well short of the green, splashing into the water. So does the second. The third. And the fourth shot. All the while, the entire gallery, the players and even McAvoy’s caddy are gasping at the futility of his efforts.
But not Roy.

How does a picnic sound? Head to the Capitol Grounds for an afternoon of music beginning with the Champagne Singers at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Reno Video Game Symphony. Bring a chair or blanket, something to snack on, and your friends and family. The Carson City Library is wrapping up its adult summer reading program with a special presentation by adventurer, photographer, cyclist Rick Gunn. Like, did you totally know that Clueless is playing at the Galaxy Theater tonight? Miss out on that? As if.

The Carson City Historical Society hosts their second yard sale of the season at the historic Forman-Roberts House on North Carson Street, so have fun treasure hunting.

It’s your last chance to catch Senior Follies at the Community Center, and the Proscenium Players have a matinee of ‘Murder in an English Manor’ this afternoon, as well.

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

I don’t mean to make this hard on you, but you have some decisions to make. All day, all night, all weekend long, there are numerous activities throughout our area. The Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting the Ford Tri-Motor this weekend, and has Young Eagles flights for the kids: registration and orientation is at 8 a.m. Head over to Eagle Valley Golf for free family golf day.

There’s one place where NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB rivalries meet annually to settle old scores. The venue: Lake Tahoe. The event: The American Century Championship. At stake: a share in the $625,000 prize purse. The scene: Six days of fist bumps, high fives, autograph signing, photos with fans, laughs galore and some great golf.

Four people were arrested Sunday on felony burglary and drug charges after two attempted to steal more than $800 worth of merchandise from a Carson City Walmart store, fleeing security officers and then getting into a vehicle occupied by two that had backpacks of new merchandise with tags, ledgers, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested on felony charges were Ashley Dadey, 28, Jessica Sanchez, 23, Priscilla Denise Roches, 28, and Pablo Benito Martinez, 35.

Since the February release of results from a student survey regarding sexual conduct and safety, a number of efforts to strengthen a supportive campus climate, one with zero tolerance for sexual assault, sexual misconduct and other life-damaging actions, have been put in place at the University of Nevada, Reno.

In March, the University launched a 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline, allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.

Red's 395 St. Patrick's Day celebration features live Irish music, traditional Irish foods like corned beef and cabbage, true Irish coffee and green beer. This St. Patrick's day event is a Carson City tradition, when once a year Red's turns Green, encouraging patrons to wear the green and sing along to Irish favorites while enjoying good company, foods and drinks!

A nursing home with a memory care unit planned for Mountain and West Washington streets in Carson City got the green light Thursday, but action on a large housing subdivision was delayed.

Carson City Library will be a busy place for youth and teens all month-long during the green month of March. Storytime will continue on Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19, and 26. Two storytimes are available at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in the library’s Digitorium.
