Seven of 10 schools in Carson City district show improvements in Nevada performance report

CARSON CITY — Seventy percent of the schools in Carson City showed improvements in the latest Star Ratings report, according to the Nevada Department of Education State. With Sunday’s release of the Nevada School Performance Framework, 7 of the 10 schools within the Carson City School District improved enough to earn a higher star ranking.

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Senator Square: Carson High School seniors rise with the sun

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

New York-based playwright, opera librettist, theatre critic, and arts journalist David Cote is the current visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in historic Silver City, Nev.

While he's here in August and September, he hopes to draft a 70-minute, spoken, dramatic monologue for a male performer about carpentry, family, and faith. You can learn more about his creative process during a free, public talk at the Brick at 108 E Proctor Street in Carson City this Thursday August 22, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in an event that also includes a talk by Chicago-based sculptor Nicole Beck.

Carson Montessori faces issues in finding — and funding — new location

Carson City’s Montessori has been educating a portion of the capitol city’s children for over a decade. They quickly outgrew their space, and have been looking to relocate for about 13 years.

Now, an end may be in sight. According to Carson Montessori Executive Director Jessica Daniels, the school has been looking at the vacant Silver State Charter School complex on Fairview since Silver State shut its doors. After funding fell out more than once, they’re at it again, and a tentative offer of over one million dollars has been offered for the space.

Airport manager to speak at Carson City Democratic luncheon

Ken Moen, Carson City Airport Manager, will be the featured speaker at the Monday's Democratic luncheon. He came to the job well prepared in 2018 after careers in air traffic control, publishing, and airport management with the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority. He will touch on the ways in which recently-passed AB406 will strengthen management at the Carson Airport Authority. He will also give a preview of the airport's open house coming up on Saturday, June 29th.

Carson City's Pioneer High School graduates 56, breaks record for scholarships received

Pioneer High School held a graduation ceremony Tuesday evening at the Carson City Community Center to commemorate the achievements of 56 students who completed their high school coursework.

Between the 56 students, they secured nearly $125,000 in awards and scholarships to assist with continuing education, which is a new record for the high school.

150 Jump Start students graduate from Western Nevada College at Carson City ceremony

CARSON CITY — For the first time, Western Nevada College’s Jump Start graduating class has topped triple digits. WNC’s Jump Start graduation class includes 150 students, representing 12 high schools and two academies.

Go Fund Me account established for Carson City man awaiting kidney transplant

A Carson City couple is in need of financial help to relocate briefly to Utah where they will be awaiting a kidney transplant to happen. Friends and family of the couple have established a Go Fund Me page to help with the expenses.

Gabe Torres of Carson City has irreparable damage to his kidney from Type 1 diabetes. Gabe and his wife, Megan, plan to relocate to Utah for the surgery and are in need of financial help to cover living expenses involved with their stay.

Carson High School's 'Safe Grad' seeking volunteers

Safe Grad has been a tradition for Carson High since 1988, started by community volunteers, after a series of graduation incidents and deaths related to alcohol. Senator Square: Carson High School, Empire students share Carson River experience

Editor’s note: The following was written by Carson High School biology teacher Megan Schuler.
Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.
