JoAnne Skelly: We have apple trees that did not have blossoms this spring

A reader sent me a question. “We had an arborist trim our apple tree in March and this is the first year in at least 20 years that the tree had no blossoms. Is this situation common or did we do something wrong?” Neither of my apple trees had flowers this year either. I had assumed a late freeze had caused this because often my trees bloom, then there is a freeze and the flowers wither and die. However, this year there weren’t any flowers at all.

A Bumpy Ride across Carson Skies: an overly-dramatized recount of flying in a single-engine plane on a breezy day

The first time I rode in a small plane was at the Carson City Airport Open house. I was probably 5, my brother probably 8, along with our dad who took us to geek out over the WWII planes and tanks.

The pilot offered us a ride, and we climbed aboard a small orange-and-white plane with a bench seat in the back and two seats in the front. My dad sat beside the pilot, my brother and I strapped in the back.

About thirty seconds after take-off, my brother and I noticed something horrific to our child-minds: in the back of the cockpit, buzzing around beside us, was a bee.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: The 7th at Pebble

The U.S. Open returned to Pebble Beach earlier this month and all the talk was about the par three cliffside 7th hole, a charming peninsula that sticks out into the ocean 100 yards below the tee box, and looks ever so inviting -looks that are deceiving. With a stiff onshore breeze you might want to tee off with a three iron. With no wind, which is rare, you might want a wedge.
