Returning from the holiday weekend, activities Tuesday around the capital city include the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a fundraiser at Pizza Factory in Carson City for a lifelong local and coach who has been ill, art showings and more.

The second week of January has blown in quite fiercely, with a High Wind Warning to last through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Activities around the capital city include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the library, a brown bag luncheon featuring famed environmental writer Michael Branch at the Nevada State Library and Archives, the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a meeting of the Carson City School Board, live cool jazz at Living the Good Life and more.

Sierra Lutheran High School and Bethlehem Lutheran School will be two of the schools showcased at the National School Choice Fair on Saturday, February 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno.

If you are interested in learning mosaic, there's a class offered in Dayton this month especially for you. This is Mosaic Class 101 and is a 2 to 2 ½-hour class and is designed to help you learn to use the bare necessities and to help you plan for your next project. Your Mosaic 101 project is an 8-inch stepping stone.

A surprise early visit from Santa Claus and his band of decked-out merry helpers brought beaming smiles and joy to dozens of capital city children and their families Christmas Eve, a tradition held for nearly 40 years by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Reserve Santa program.

Today, the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation named Carson City, Nevada as one of 20 small to mid-sized towns and cities across America to win a Levitt AMP Grant Award of $25K in matching funds to present a free concert series at The Change Companies Stage. The Downtown Telegraph Square Sign was revealed on Saturday, Nov. 30. Merchants of Telegraph Square, Downtown 2020 Group, Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell and a small community of people gathered together to celebrate the unveiling of the Telegraph Square Sign.

The days keep moving along, ever closer to the weekend and huge helpings of Christmas holiday activities. The familiar neon “BAR” sign that welcomed diners to the well-known Café at Adele’s restaurant in Carson City for decades, has been removed, but it didn’t stay dark long. It’s red neon glow now welcomes diners to Js’ Old Town Bistro in Dayton.

The popular sentiment this holiday season seems to be, "I'm going to save so much money this Christmas by talking politics at Thanksgiving."

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Also ahead, Carson City's GOP will host a discussion with several political leaders representing the capital city. There will be a 'Glorious Expanse' artist reception at WNC Gallery, plus library activities and more.

The First Annual Indigenous People's Heritage Day will be held at the Northern Nevada Children’s Museum in Carson City, located at 813 N. Carson St. tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

This free event is sure to be an exciting one, where people of all ages will learn about our region’s native peoples and become immersed in Washiw Tribe culture. 

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. Other events around the capital city include a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training graduation ceremony, a talk about earthquake preparedness hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more.

A three-day statewide public safety exercise, called Operation Silver Crucible 2019, began Tuesday and continues through Thursday around Nevada, including Carson City.

While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. The monthly meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club will be held on Nov. 12 at the Carson City Sheriff's Office located at 911 E. Musser Street.

One of Northern Nevada’s most popular cultural events — the annual Day of the Dead Community Celebration — returns to Carson City Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, to the Nevada State Museum with a plethora of family friendly activities.

Healing Qigong Part 1: A 6-week Qigong series will be offered Nov. 7 through Dec. 19 by instructor Deborah Stevenson at Carson City Yoga.

This relaxing, six-week qigong series promotes balance and renewal, perfect for this holiday season. Healing Qigong Part 1 consists of ten easy movements with an emphasis on gathering “chi” from the universe and learning how to move energy throughout the body.

The movements will be broken down step by step and each class in the series will build upon the previous one.

Sunday will bring cool temperatures and some sunshine with daytime highs in the mid 60s around the capital city region. Lined up today are fall train rides in Carson City and Virginia City, a women veteran's support group meeting, and a a discussion with survivors, family and doctors about metastatic breast cancer. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include Harvest Train festivities at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Thomas the Tank Engine and steam train rides in Virginia City, the first-ever Gandy Dance in Dayton, October Ghost Walk Tours through downtown Carson City and more!

I would like to express mine and Karen’s immense gratitude for the years and love our community, friends, staff and family have shown through our various endeavors — Cafe at Adele’s, political runs and support of an array of non-profits.

The statistics are staggering. Thirty percent of the people diagnosed with breast cancer go on to get metastatic breast cancer.

Metastatic beast cancer is an incurable disease. It is when breast cancer has spread beyond the breast, possibly to the lymph nodes or other organs in the body. Around 40,000 people a year in the US die from it. It is the advanced part of breast cancer and it is rarely discussed.

With the closing of Cafe at Adele’s, Carson City and its community will witness the end of an era.

This decision by owners Chef Charlie and Karen Abowd, comes in the wake of a fire that occurred March 28, and the subsequent inability to negotiate a settlement with the insurance company that would cover reconstruction costs.
