So much for an early spring, Carson City. Depending on how much snow hits the valley floor, the Monday morning commute could take longer than usual, so please slow down and drive carefully. I wonder if they will be bringing a snow shovel to the Downtown Corridor Construction ground-breaking at 11 a.m.

Mondays aren’t always something special, but a day like this only comes once every four years. Happy Leap Day, everyone. Have a leisurely lunch at Comma Coffee while listening to Dennis on the Piano. Toast the day with a mimosa at Ed’s Doghouse. Raise your glass to for a good cause: Suds for Seniors is raising money for the Meals on Wheels Program. A $15 ticket will get you a sample of five beers at the Feisty Goat Pub or at the Firkin and Fox. Might as well stick around the Firkin for karaoke and some yummy grub.

Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd. Better yet, take me out for some frozen yogurt at Yogurt Beach where you’ll find a fundraiser and walk-in sign-ups for Carson City Little League. Relay for Life is holding a fundraiser, as well. Head to Buffalo Wild Wings and let them know you’re there for Relay. Round out the Valentine’s Day weekend by singing some love songs: karaoke at Firkin and Fox is always a good time.

It may seem like just another Monday, but today kicks off the Year of the Monkey. Apparently it’s considered unlucky, but only if you were born in the year of the Monkey yourself. This is a year when anything can happen. Spend the day enjoying something beautiful. The Nevada Artist Association Gallery at the Brewery Art Center will be changing its exhibit at the end of the week, so go take a last peek at what’s on display.

You won’t have to rush the kids to school today. It’s a professional development day for the Carson City School District, so make some snowmen, go bowling, or just stay home and watch movies. It’s going to be slick out there, please drive safely. Tonight, head to the Firkin and Fox for dinner and some karaoke. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club is at El Charro Avita this evening, which means there will be plenty of people to boogie with.

  • Carson City School District Professional Development Day: No School. Lyon County schools will be on a two hour delay and Douglas County, one hour due to road conditions.

Sunday, Jan. 31: Things to do around Carson City

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Pair that with unlimited bowling until noon and you’ve got yourself a great Sunday. The Capital City Community Band performs at the First Presbyterian Church in its annual ‘Let the Band Play On’ concert. Show some appreciation for these talented musicians by making a donation to their group. Games aren’t just for kids, you know. Nerdvana is holding its first ‘Adult Games Night’ this evening, just make sure to bring your ID.

Welcome back, Wildcats. The 2016 spring semester begins today at Western Nevada College. While you’re wandering around campus, make sure to check out the new exhibit in the Bristlecone building’s Main Gallery. Relax after your first day of classes with a tasting sampler at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Suds for Seniors’ is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and lets you try five of the draft beers on tap. Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living on West College Parkway. Sandi ‘Pipes’ Medley will be singing some jazz favorites.

Business Spotlight: It's Game On at Nerdvana

Just about every night is family game night at Nerdvana, a local gaming supply and collectibles store in east Carson City.

Store co-owner Jim Williamson describes he and his son’s venture as a family and veteran-oriented business that specializes in providing a venue for table top games.

“The business model is community,” he said. “People can come in and use the tables at no charge. It’s a place for them to bring their families” for role-playing games and tournaments.

The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly at El Charro Avita. If you’re looking for more quality time with your family, then Nerdvana’s Family Game Night is a great way to have fun with the kids. Recycling your Christmas tree (sans decorations, of course) is an easy way to get your carbon footprint headed in the right direction.

The ice rink at Arlington Square has extended hours for the next two weeks, so strap on some skates and have fun. Santa will be at the Carson Mall every day until Christmas Eve. Nerdvana has found new digs at the corner of Airport Road and Hwy 50 East. Monday is family game night: who’s up for a challenge?

It’s done snowing, but that doesn’t mean that the roads are clear. Please drive carefully. There are still great options for holiday shopping: craft fairs at the Carson Mall and Browser’s Corner Book Store, in addition to our great local shops. If you’ve got your gifts, but don’t feel like wrapping them, then the Rainbow Girls Gift Wrap is for you! Head to the Carson Mall and let the girls of Assembly #7 take the chore off your hands. The countdown to Christmas has begun. Our downtown is aglow in holly jolly lights and looks amazing. The weekend was jam-packed with holiday cheer: Silver and Snowflakes, the Holiday Crawl, craft fairs, and the Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. Monday’s offer some fun times, as well, with swing dancing at El Charro’s or karaoke at the Firkin and Fox. Shopping and wine await at 'Ladies Night Out' at the Holiday Inn Express in Minden. It's a benefit for the Family Support Council of Douglas County.

It’s the last day of November, and there has been no shortage of wintery weather. Take advantage of the season by hitting the ice at Arlington Square. The weekday afternoon special for elementary and middle school kids includes free skate rental and hot chocolate. Watch the Ravens take on the Browns at Empire Ranch Golf Course, and partake in their weekly buffet. It’s Monday, but this week should fly by. Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, so you probably want to start thawing your bird. There are still many organizations collecting food for families, so consider dropping off a frozen turkey at Salvation Army, or something non-perishable in one of the many bins around town. If helping kids is a passion, you’ll want to attend the informational meeting at the office of the Court Appointed Special Advocates this evening. CASA is always looking for people who’d like to make a difference to a child.

All aboard, Carson City. The Polar Express returns to the Virginia and Truckee Thursday. This annual tradition features hot chocolate, caroling, and a read-along of Chris Van Allsburg's Christmas story, in addition to a visit to Santa at the North Pole.

It was rainy last night in our valley, but this evening should see some snow. A winter wonderland isn’t always easy to drive in, so please slow down and be careful. For those of you with swing in your step, head to El Charro Avita for intermediate dance lessons and the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out.’

Let it rain. We enjoyed a perfect Nevada Day weekend: not too cold or hot, and the wind didn’t pick up until long after the floats left the parade route. Halloween was enjoyed by all with trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion, the annual Blinky Man Halloween ride, the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Brewery Arts Center, and costumes galore. It’s time to move into November, though. Daylight savings time has ended and there is talk of snow.

Monday has returned, but it brings us one day closer to the Halloween/Nevada Day weekend. Just a reminder, Carson City trick-or-treats on Friday, Oct. 30 this year. For our newer residents, this follows the Carson City custom of not having treat night the same day as the parade. The last time this happened was in 2009. Don’t get tricked, you’ll see the little ones a day early. If you need a pumpkin, check out the pumpkin patch at Red Horse Ranch on Cochise, just south of Clearview Dr.

Monday returns, and I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather this past weekend. Autumn in Northern Nevada follows no rules when it comes to temperature, so enjoy it while you can, because it can, and does, change on a dime. A great way to start your week is by enjoying something beautiful, and luckily Carson City offers a good handful of art exhibits to appreciate. If you missed Industrial Art at the Courthouse, wander over to its new home in the Carson City Library. Today also kicks-off a week-long celebration at the Carson Cigar Company in honor of their 20th Anniversary. Enjoy live music with ‘Cheese the Knife’ featuring Ev Mussleman of the Trippin King Snakes. If you prefer to do the singing yourself, Firkin and Fox is where you’ll find karaoke.

National Do Something Nice Day sounds a lot better than Monday. Jump Around Carson, our city bus, is doing something nice to celebrate its tenth anniversary: free bus rides all day. Here’s a link to the schedule. New artwork has moved into most of the galleries in town. Industrial Art is now at the Library; Divergence just opened at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery; and you’ll find Liz Penniman’s exhibit at the Western Nevada College Gallery.

Bowling, books, music, and art: that’s what Monday is made of. Monday’s are always a good day to head to Carson Lanes Bowling Alley. Enjoy specials on games and shoe rentals, so bring the whole family. Karaoke at Firkin and Fox will liven up your evening. A new exhibit opens in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council. It’s in the same building as the Visitor’s Center. Celebrate your favorite saucy book at the Carson City Library. It’s Banned Book Week, and it’s surprising to see what books have been banned over the years.

Monday Night Football debuted on this day in 1970. Forty-five years later, the tradition continues. Catch the Jets and Colts duke it out tonight at your favorite sports bar. If pigskin just isn’t your game, consider joining the High Sierra Swing Dance Club tonight at El Charro Avita. You can catch the game and sing your heart out at the Firkin and Fox. Monday night is karaoke. It’s the first day of fall, so you may want to make a habit of keeping a sweater handy once the sun goes down.

Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.
