Monday, August 1: Things to do in Carson City

The construction downtown is showing signs of advancement with the recent completion of the Bob McFadden Plaza.
Community Art Night or C.A.N.

Local artists will line the sidewalks of Telegraph Street, while they create their artwork. Allowing the community to meet and ask questions.
Local musicians Rob and Kelly Hale, better known as "Mountain Folk" will be providing the live music for the evening. The event is Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Food trucks will be outside of the galleries to fill those hungry bellies.

Never fear, Artsy Fartsy and the Charlie B Art Galleries are teaming up again for a night of art, food trucks, and more in Telegraph Square downtown. Dress as your favorite superhero for Gardnerville’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk. Enjoy ice cream and a concert by the Capital City Community Band at the First United Methodist Church on Musser St. Close out the evening with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Begin your week with a visit to one of Carson City’s many art galleries: the Brewery Arts Center, the Courthouse, the Community Center, and the Visitor’s Center are just some of the venues. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for a Ghost Hunt, and stick around for dinner or a cocktail on their patio. Game night at Nerdvana is open to all board game lovers, but Game Night at Carson Cigar Company is meant only for those over 21.

Take a moment and explore all the downtown area galleries: the Community Building by City Hall, the gallery upstairs of in the Courthouse, the Sierra Room in the Community Center, and the walls of the Visitor Center. Grab your cowboy boots and learn to line dance at Carson Lanes. Sassafras welcomes Judith and Rocky to the stage for a jazz jam as fun and funky as their menu.

CCAI Nevada Neighbors talk: Museum Work: Increasing Creative Capital
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 03/14/2016 - 7:34amOn Tuesday, March 15, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by artist and curator Paul Baker Prindle. His illustrated talk, Museum Work: Increasing Creative Capital, is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series.
The talk will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building (formerly “the BRIC”), 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Paul preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Nevada to participate in national survey to study economic impact of community arts
Submitted by editor on Wed, 02/10/2016 - 5:30pmThe Nevada Arts Council will participate in a national research study, known as Arts and Economic Prosperity 5, to measure the economic impact of nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences.
The study is being conducted by Americans for the Arts, the leading nonprofit arts organization for advancing the arts in the United States. The Council is one of nearly 300 study partners across the U.S. that will help with gathering detailed financial and event attendance data from nonprofit arts and cultural organizations during 2016.
Reception Tuesday at OXS Gallery features Nate Clark's recent paintings in 'Leeway'

Clark’s discussion begins at 6:15. The reception is free and open to the public. In “Leeway,” a selection of Clark’s recent paintings, the artist examines order and structure through mark making.

Carson City wins tourism grants for mountain bike promotion, art walk, MAC and powwow

Gov. Mark Hutchison announced Wednesday.

Liz Penniman Exhibit at the WNC Gallery

Her artistic roots are influenced by the San Francisco Bay Area Figurative Movement, and her education at the Art Student's League of New York focused first on classical portraiture and later on abstract expressionism. She currently lives and works in the North Tahoe/Truckee area and participates in The Reno Art Salon and Critique Circle.

Jump Around Carson, our city bus, is doing something nice to celebrate its tenth anniversary: free bus rides all day. Here’s a link to the schedule. New artwork has moved into most of the galleries in town. Industrial Art is now at the Library; Divergence just opened at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery; and you’ll find Liz Penniman’s exhibit at the Western Nevada College Gallery.
Timberlake joins sports legends Tuesday during Tahoe celebrity opening practice round

Among the headliners to warm up and sign autographs at the famed Tahoe South course were defending 2014 champion Mark Rypien, retired New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, American Olympic soccer star Brandi Chastain and first-timer Justin Timberlake.

Grab some potato salad, fresh fruit, and an umbrella: scattered thunderstorms are expected for most of the week. I’ll suggest you spend the rainy days in one of Carson City’s many art galleries, instead. The Nevada Artists Association gallery at the Brewery Arts Center, Great Basin Art Gallery on South Curry, or Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery on West Telegraph are always impressive. Check out the Carson City Arts Initiative exhibits at the BRIC and on the second floor of the Courthouse.
