Tuesday Easy Walk Program - Sonoma Park

Meet at the corner of Sonoma and Fremont Street.

A different walk every week on Tuesdays. Walks are easy paced, on level ground, of approximately 1 hour duration, and of no cost to participants. All skill levels are welcome and leader is willing to work with participants to develop an individual walking program. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and leader may request physician’s release if needed.

Carson City Library, schools team up to promote bicycle safety with reading

Western Nevada Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator Cortney Bloomer delivers books to the Ride for Reading event at Bordewich Bray Elementary School in Carson City, Nev., on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015.

The Carson City School District, the Carson City Library and the Friends of the Library joined the effort to distribute free books to more than 1,500 local students. Better World Books donates the books to help promote reading and bicycle safety.

Chautauqua of George Whittell, Jr., "Playboy Millionaire Who Built the Thunderbird Lodge”

Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." at the Dangberg Historic Ranch Home, Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. This is a free outdoor event. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or use one of the park’s chairs. Dogs are not permitted in the park, with the exception of certified service animals.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 25-31, 2015: Due to roadway sealing, there will be road closures throughout the entire week east of downtown in the general vicinity of William Street to the north, Saliman Road to the east, Fifth Street to the south, and Carson Street to the west, as well as along Deer Run Road and Pinon Hills Drive and the neighborhood directly west of Fremont Elementary School.

On Tuesday, May 19, the intersection of Division and Washington Streets will be closed due to tree maintenance. Detours will be signed.

Outdoors with Don Q: California fishing season begins Saturday

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

After enjoying a free spirits tasting at Red’s this afternoon, stick around for a movie with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. This month is ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy:’ a 1965 Charlton Heston flick about Michelangelo and the painting of the Sistine Chapel.

Court Appointed Special Advocates is holding an information hour this evening for those who would like more information on how to volunteer.

Parking available off Baker Dr. & Fremont St. for easy access to the egg huting zones.
