Carson City Harvest Club to receive grant to produce locally grown food for local families

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

Chinese herbal medicines workshop offered through Western Nevada College

With an expanding public interest for alternative health care, domestic production of Chinese medicinal herbs offers a new and untapped market to Nevada farmers.

The Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers a workshop, “The Business of Chinese Herbal Medicines,” Saturday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the WNC Carson Campus, 2201 W. College Parkway, Carson City. Cost is $45 for those registering by October 25, $55 afterward.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

SENarts continues beyond the 2013 legislative session

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City has joined the SENarts Partnership, collaborating with the Nevada Division of Museums and the Nevada Arts Council to bring high-quality art experiences to the state Legislative Building.

As one component of this partnership, the Nevada Senate and the Brewery Arts Center jointly announced Tuesday that a new art show comprised of about 50 pieces by local art students has been installed on the second floor of the Legislative Building and would be in place for four months.

CARSON CITY — For the second year, online voters picked the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden as one of six standout sites in the 2013 Nevada Treasures in the Discover Your Nevada contest, officials announced Monday.

USDA Invites Applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants

Column: A Child’s Building Blocks

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.
