Carson Middle School Jazz Band Headed to Festival

More than 300 middle and high school musicians will perform during the 14th annual Jazz in the Schools program on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Nightingale Concert Hall at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus.

This week's guest on Women to Women Nevada with Carol Paz is with Carson City surgeon Dr. Kent Gabriel.

Dr. Gabriel's educational background began at Yale University where he graduated Summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and was one of eleven graduating seniors elected as Scholar of the House. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University in England.

Robotics competition set for Saturday at Western Nevada College

Creative minds will be stimulated on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The public is welcome to watch the 2013-14 Northern Nevada FIRST Tech Challenge Championship at the Donald W. Reynolds Technology Center. The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

Carson Tahoe Health, University of Utah Health Care partner to improve specialist access

Officials from Carson Tahoe Health announced a new partnership Thursday with Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health Care that will extend the resources of a premier academic medical center to Carson City, Douglas County, Dayton and the surrounding communities.

The agreement formalizes a long tradition of collaboration between the two health care providers.

Enrichment Fund gives Carson City opportunity to address needs for children

It is the little things that often make a big difference: The $10 lab fee for a chemistry class, $20 for a pair of soccer shoes, $40 towards a music or art program.

The Educational Enrichment Fund was established by Partnership Carson City, a 501c3 non profit organization to “promote the educational success and positive growth of young people through age 18 in our community,” said Kathy Bartosz, executive director of PCC.

Western Nevada College opens Carson City Student Veterans Resource Center

The student veterans group of Western Nevada College celebrated the opening of the Western Nevada College Student Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, 1-3 p.m., at the Carson City campus.

The four-room center located in the Cedar Building is the only one of its kind in Northern Nevada. It offers counseling services, student staff, access to VA benefit/medical information, and a study/tutor area with Internet access. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Women to Women Nevada with Sue Jesch

Sue Jesch is the Education Director of the Carson City Symphony and an amazing private violin and viola instructor. She has taught violin and viola and performed professionally for more than 30 years. She began playing in the Carson City Symphony when she moved to Nevada in 2004.

She became founding director of the Symphony’s successful Strings in the Schools and Strings in the Summer programs in 2005. She is recipient of the 2011 Nevada Governor’s Arts Award for Leadership in Arts Education.

Carson City schools, law enforcement recognize national Red Ribbon drug awareness campaign

The Carson City School District and Carson City Sheriff’s Office are partnering together to prevent substance abuse by celebrating National Red Ribbon Campaign the dates of October 21-31, 2013.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the family of fallen D.E.A. Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena after he died in the line of duty. This national event was later recognized by the United States Congress and has since become the nation’s largest substance abuse prevention awareness campaign with an estimated 80 million Americans participating annually.
