Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

Eagle Valley Middle School Robotics Team Indoor Yard Sale

Join us for an indoor yard sale to benefit the Eagle Valley Middle School robotics team, The Jedi Engineers. This team will be headed to Bath, UK in June to compete in an International Championship. One hundred percent of the proceeds will assist the team with travel costs. Join us inside the big gym from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We have something for everyone!

Eagle Valley Middle School Day at the Reno Aces

The Reno Aces will be hosting a fundraiser to help the Eagle Valley Middle School Lego Robotics Team get to England. The game will take place on Friday, May 12th at 6:00 PM. Tickets are only $15 with proceeds going to help the Lego Robotics Team. Each ticket is located in the Right Infield Section and comes with a complimentary Reno Aces Ball Cap.
If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please contact Carol Earle at carol@sundition.com for more information. A total headcount has to be turned into the Reno Aces by Tuesday, May 9th so please do not hesitate.

Carson Proud: Eagle Valley Jedi Engineers take 3rd in Teamwork Award at World Championship

Eagle Valley Middle School’s FIRST LEGO League team, The Jedi Engineers, have returned from the FIRST World Festival Championships! FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, inspires young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.

Carson High School Robotics Team advances to FIRST World Championship

Team Captain, the Carson High School robotics team representing Carson City, has been invited to the prestigious FIRST World Championship, which includes 39 countries, in Houston, Texas to be held next month.

Manufacturers proclaim Eagle Valley Middle School Jedi engineers team junior tech partners

The Micromanipulator Company recently hosted the award-winning 2016-17 Eagle Valley Middle School Jedi Engineers of Carson City, along with school district officials, local businesses, families and friends.

During the Thursday, March 16 event at the company’s facility, the Jedi Engineers were presented with a proclamation from the Western Manufacturing Alliance naming them the first “WMA Junior Technology Advancement Partners” in recognition of their robotics achievements.

March Madness has hit Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City. No, not basketball, but its Robotics team. Eagle Valley’s Jedi Engineers First LEGO League Team won the Northern Nevada LEGO League Championship and is now headed to the World Championship finals in Houston in April. They have also been invited to compete in Bath, England this summer.

Irish eyes are smiling on us: it’s going to be a gorgeous day. You won’t have to look far for some green beer, whiskey, or corned beef – there will be St. Patrick’s Day parties all over. Live music is on the menu, as well. Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

First known as the Ides of March, today is also ‘Veteran’s Day’ at the State Legislature. Brian Sandoval presides over a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at 9 a.m., and even more is in store at the Legislature, including a BBQ. It’s also Nevada Moves Day, which means you’ll see a lot of school age walkers and bicyclists on the sidewalks. Reward your family with a movie at the Library tonight: The BFG is fun for all ages. Learn more about our little lake to the north with a presentation at the Washoe Lake State Park Ranger Office.

What’s this? A weekend with no snow in sight? That’s the best news I’ve heard in months. Welcome to the wrestlers and swimmers who are in town for their respective tournaments: you’ll find other fun things on this list to occupy your downtime. It’s a St. Patty’s celebration in Virginia City this weekend with the parade, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest, and Ball Buster Saloon Crawl. Bragging rights are on the line at the Sixth Annual Thirsty Boy Homebrew Competition sponsored by Just Brew It. You’ll get a sneak peek at the soon-to-open Shoe Tree Brewery if you attend the award ceremony.

Senator Square: There’s always next year

Students competed Feb. 17 at the Thompson Federal Courthouse in Reno, Nevada in the Northern Nevada Regional Mock Trial Competition. All schools were given the same case construct and asked to create their own take on it, presenting it as an attorney and a witness would in a real court case.

All you have to do is Dine In, Call for Delivery or Pick Up some amazing pizzas, calzones, wings and sandwiches and the fabulous owner of Carson City Pizza Factory will donate 20% of the entire day's earnings to the EVMS PTO. All monies raised will help us purchase outdoor picnic tables for staff and students to enjoy on beautiful days.

Carson Online education program helps Carson City students graduate

Carson Online, the Carson City School District’s online education program, was piloted at Pioneer High School in 2009. It has become a very successful online credit option for students that has helped change culture, provide technological support and has contributed to raising the graduation rate in the district.

Carlos Montejana and Alyssa Butler of Carson City were awarded the first annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association last month.

Carson City schools back in session amidst heavy rains, flooding

Students in Carson City returned to class Tuesday for the first time in 2017 after a three-week winter break.

The first day of classess immediately followed area flooding over the weekend that continues to affect some parts of the city.

A flood advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno remains in effect for the area.

WNC fosters technology leaders of tomorrow through robotics events

What’s next? We already have Megatron, R2-D2, Optimus Prime and Rosie. On back-to-back days at Western Nevada College, students immersed in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education showed what they could do when their minds were stimulated through technology and robotics.

Celebrate the classic film and our classy library with an afternoon showing of the movie. Eagle Valley Middle School takes up collection for needy through Faith, Hope, Love

Students and staff at Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) in Carson City took up a collection on behalf of Faith, Hope, Love of Northern Nevada and Northern Nevada HotSpot to provide clothing and other necessary items for those in need, said Northern Nevada HotSpot owner Cassidy Davis, who also coordinates the efforts of Faith, Hope, Love of Northern Nevada.

Kindness ninja encourages Carson City students to commit acts of compassion

When talking with students, Brian Williams compares their lives to being dealt a hand of cards. Some cards are health or illness, wealth or poverty, strong families or dysfunctional ones.

“You can’t control the cards you’re given, and you can’t hand them back in,” he told Eagle Valley Middle School students Monday afternoon. “Sometimes people look at their cards and think, ‘This is a horrible hand, there’s no way I can win.’ But there are always people who can take a terrible deck of cards and come away winning.”
