Prestige Care invites Carson City community members of all ages to send positive notes, warm wishes and fun artwork to its residents to spread cheer and uplift spirits during this unprecedented time.

Citing a troubling uptick in the state’s COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, Gov. Steve Sisolak has announced a new state mandate requiring individuals to wear a facial covering or mask while in public.

While reading is usually its own reward, patrons who take part in the Carson City Library's 2020 Summer Learning Challenge will also be earning raffle tickets as they lose themselves in a good book, peruse the daily paper or attend a virtual program.

Although most retail businesses in the state were allowed to open May 9 to in-person service with extra precautions as part of the state’s “Phase 1” reopening, casino resorts were noticeably excluded.

The Nevada State Public Health Lab is currently conducting COVID-19 testing by way of real-time polymerase chain reaction, which is a form of testing that detects the virus itself. In the coming weeks, the NSPHL will begin a new form of testing, which includes detection of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Such a test may be able to determine whether a person has been infected with the virus, in the past.

Earlier this month, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation issued a press release with a jubilant headline: “Nevada’s Unemployment Rate Hits an All-Time Low.”

Heading into Tuesday, sunny skies and more springlike weather are ahead before active weather patterns start up again later in the week. Activities lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered. Heading into the first Thursday in March and we're looking at continued sunshine with a high near 70. The Western Nevada College chapter of the National Student Nurses Association proudly presents our annual Spaghetti Feed, this Friday March 6th, 2020 from 5-8 pm.

Price of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Please come hungry! During our family friendly event we will be hosting our silent auction comprised of items donated by many businesses’ in the Northern Nevada area.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. The Carson City Celtic Music series will be at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday featuring Fortunate Strangers. Bob Cashell, the former longtime mayor of Reno and Nevada lieutenant governor known for his big personality, died on Tuesday. He was 81.

Jim Bauserman, a family friend, confirmed the news to The Nevada Independent. Community leaders, including current Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, offered tributes on Tuesday.

Capitol FFA traveled to North Valleys High School Feb. 1 in order to compete in the Northern FFA Zone Competition. CHS Agriculture Mechanics, Welding, and FFA Adviser and teacher Rebecca Glocknitzer said, "I know all of our students worked hard to prepare for Zone, and Mr. Mann and I are so proud of their efforts."

Carson City is at the center of a legal dispute following its refusal to allow hemp to be grown on property in the Buzzys Ranch area in East Carson City. Tahoe Hemp is suing for $15 million in damages citing the city broke its agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust, which gives rights to the family to use the property for agricultural purposes.

On Friday night, the local Elks Lodge chapter hosted a sold-out dinner and fundraiser event in support of the Carson City Search and Rescue volunteers.

The program included a a live auction, raffle drawing, and presentation of the Elks National Foundation grant of $2,500. These Gratitude Grants are used to support local, charitable activities such as hosting a community clean-up day, purchasing supplies for a homeless shelter, or organizing a school literacy fair.

The Elks Lodge is celebrating 150 years of service.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

The first significant winter storm of 2020 will be blowing into the region Thursday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy snow in the Sierra and 1-2 inches of snow possible in the lower valleys. A 34-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in the area of Kings Canyon and Kingsview for suspicion of felony parole and probation violation, misdemeanor jaywalking and being an intoxicated pedestrian, a Carson City sheriff's report states.
