Carson City man faces felony domestic violence charges

A Carson City man faces a felony domestic battery charge after allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face with a cup in front of their 5-year-old daughter, grabbing the woman by the throat and preventing her their from leaving the home.

Justin Thomas Keeney, 33, was arrested Thursday, April 28, in the 900 block of Saliman Road. Bail was set at $27,500.

Nevada State DARE Officer Conference Begins Monday

Carson City Sheriff’s Office was selected by the Nevada DARE Officer Association (NDOA) as an “Agency of Choice” and will host the Nevada State DARE Officer Conference May 2-5, 2011. DARE Officers representing law enforcement agencies from across the state will be participating in a variety of training activities that will enhance classroom skills, update DARE lessons, and to discuss current prevention issues. The event is sponsored by Northern Nevada Coin, Fandango, and Carson Station, with additional funding through Justice Assistance Grant.

'Atlas Shrugged Part I' - politcs as a movie, and not very good

The film "Atlas Shrugged Part 1," opened Friday night at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City. The opening was overshadowed by the first-night celebration the V&T's No. 18 steam locomotive in "Water for Elephants," an average romance-plus-disaster film.

Carson City Democrats Jefferson Jackson Dinner

Congresswoman Shelly Berkley is will be the featured speaker for the Carson City Democrats' annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner, Wed. April 20 at the Carson Nugget. Also speaking will be retired Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for no-host bar, with dinner served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45 in advance, or $50 at the door. There will be live and silent auctions, and many raffle prizes as well.

Healthy Communities Coalition: Collaboration Leads to Results

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts special speakers during public meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. Fourteenth annual Invitational Fishing Derby at Topaz Lake

Mark your calendars for April 24-26 for the highly-popular John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby. John is the Assistant General Manager for the Carson Station Hotel and Casino in Carson City, and this will be the 14th version of his annual, fun-filled, fishing event at Topaz Lake.
His derby is traditionally co-headquartered at the Topaz Lake Marina and the Topaz Lake Lodge at Topaz Lake, which lies along the Nevada-California state line about 40 miles south of Carson City.

Students honor Cesar Chavez at UNR today

Press Release — Today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the University of Nevada Latino Student Advisory Board will host a Cesar Chavez commemoration under the rotunda in the Knowledge Center just south of Lawlor Events Center next to the Crowley Student Union. Fiesta Mexicana will dance and Sen. Moises Denis, D-Las Vegas, will speak.

"We are hosting this event because we want to honor Cesar Chavez and his contributions to civil rights," said student leader Carla Castedo, a senior psychology major.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club and the Carson Nugget present the Sierra Swing Showcase April 2-3 in the Nugget's upstairs ballroom, 507 N. Carson St., Carson City. Dance contests and workshops for adults and youths are interspersed with open dancing to a variety of DJ music. The Swing Into Spring Formal Dinner Dance and "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contest is Saturday, 6 pm-midnight. Celebrities include Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Supervisor Molly Walt and Sheriff Ken Furlong.

It was a stark contrast between two totally different worlds. In Carson City, we had been experiencing winter weather conditions, seemingly forever, which is typical for this time of the year: furnace running off and on, all day and all night; heavy frost on the car windows in the mornings, ominous-looking gray clouds filling the skies; cold, biting winds; snow-covered landscapes; trees without leaves; dead-looking flower gardens; having to wear winter jackets and gloves; all kinds of neighbors and friends with sniffles, coughs and colds.

March 5 is the date of a highly-popular chukar fundraiser

Saturday evening, March 5, will be the date of my all-time favorite fundraiser: The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser, which will be held as usual at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
More importantly, this year’s version will be its 25th.

Wow! 25 years! Congrats for all you have done for Nevada’s wildlife!

Virginia City Bonanza Days to feature Comstock lecture, commemorative coin

Carson City attorney Wally Earhart will portray President Lincoln and deliver the Comstock Historical Lecture at the revival of Virginia City's Bonanza Days on March 5.

He will be joined by the Comstock Civil War Re-enactors who will assist in hosting the dinner in character. The Marshall Mint will premiere the first strike of its new Big Bonanza commemorative silver coin at the event.

Don Quilici's Outdoors: Amtrak fun between Reno and Sacramento

Seven fun-loving people from this area spent last Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13, traveling on the Amtrak passenger train between Reno and Sacramento, Calif.

Revived Virginia City Bonanza Days to benefit Nevada Historical Society

The inaugural Big Bonanza Days Dinner and Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 5, at Virginia City's newest hotel, the Silverland Inn & Suites.

The Silverland is the major sponsor of the event. Proprietor Hugh Roy Marshall is a longtime amateur Nevada historian. He involved two experienced Nevada business executives in the revival of one of Virginia City's most storied events.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Proscenium Players, Inc. in conjunction with the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in Carson City are about to unveil a mystery dinner show about an 80th birthday party attended by two feuding Irish families trying to get their hands on the Wild Irish Rose Whiskey recipe running weekends through Jan. 29. The performance is called "Eat, Drink & Be Murdered!"

Proscenium Players offer a menu of mystery this weekend

Proscenium Players rise again with a murder mystery on the menu starting Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. when cast members mingle with the audience to gather clues about the upcoming murder story "Eat, Drink and Be Merry." Some pre-show music will be offered by Sweet Vocal Renditions featuring Sweet Molly McGee. Irish fare dinner begins at 6:30 with the show starting at 7:15 p.m.

Prizes will be given to the firs three audience members who solve mystery.

Continued support through Community Covenant for military families and veterans in Lyon and Storey counties

During the September 2010 Healthy Communities Coalition meeting, over 70 community leaders and officials from throughout Lyon County, Nevada gathered to sign a “community covenant.” The covenant promised Lyon County communities, State and local groups will work together to increase community support to the area’s military families and veterans. A number of new or expanded events and initiatives have followed that pledge.
