Senator Square: 'Happiest Carson High School Homecoming on Earth' a huge success

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Rockabilly Riot car show, Dayton Valley Days, a pancreatic cancer awareness walk at Silver Oak Golf Course, the annual Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Facility, horse endurance races in Virginia City, history talks at Mormon Station Park and much more!

Ghost tours, show-n-shine, chili cook-off and more featured at 2019 Dayton Valley Days

The 31st annual Dayton Valley Days kicks off this weekend with a street festival, food booths, plenty of games for kids, a host of family entertainment options including gold panning, ghost tours, a vehicle show and shine, chili cook-off, Sunday pet parade and more.

Tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019 at 7 p.m. Carson High School Theatre Arts will show Wednesday Night Live in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. This is an annual show consisting of lots of laughs, and good fun. Feeling down? Come tonight, and we'll make sure to cheer you up!

Board of Supervisor's meeting to discuss several new Carson City subdivision plans

The upcoming Board of Supervisor’s meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

On the table for discussion are grant funding for the Sheriff’s Office, a new public guardian, and several new subdivision discussions.

First ever 'Gandy Dance' coming to Dayton Oct. 19

Senator Square: Time for the Happiest Carson High School Homecoming on Earth

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

Last year, approximately 1000 children participated and we expect a bigger crowd this year. Senator Square: First week of school a blast at Carson High School

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

Jukebox International Film Festival winds down with music films, workshop and awards

Jukebox International Film Festival, which celebrates music and film, begins its last day of its 3-day run at noon today, Thursday, at the Carson City Community Center.

The day will kick off with a block of music videos, then go right into the pictured films. Another panel discussion concerning copyrights, licensing and other legal matters will be at 4 p.m. The festival concludes with an awards presentation at 9 p.m.

Wildfire near Topaz Ranch Estates 40 percent contained, full containment by Saturday

UPDATE: Fire officials said Thursday the Canyon Fire is 40 percent contained and burned around 440-acres. Full containment is expected by Saturday.

UPDATE 10:33PM: Evacuations have been lifted for residents east of Canyon Drive but the evacuation center remains open. Firefighters will continue to fight the Canyon Fire through the evening, according to the Douglas County government Twitter feed. The fire is estimated at 1,500 acres.

A brush fire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in south Douglas County near Topaz Ranch Estate in the Minnehaha Canyon area has firefighters from surrounding agencies, including Carson City, responding.

Acting Workshop at JIFF features Screen Actors Guild VP

The acting workshop today, Wednesday at Jukebox International Film Festival, in its second day now at Carson City Community Center, just got better. The current VP of Screen Actors Guild, Darrin Miller, will be presenting with workshop leaders Ryan Adams and Alex Emanuel. This is a must-attend event, only available this one time. Admission is $5, and the workshop starts at 2:30 in the Bonanza Room at the Community Center, 851 East William Street.
